They are, there is also a nylon gear elsewhere in the motor that supposedly gets affected by the grease used on the steel gears. The internal seals are not what they should be to prevent grease migration from one part of the motor to another. The theory is that while the Bafang grease is compatible with the nylon gear, other lubes used by owners may not be.

You know, unless I'm crazy I could swear both gears were metallic - none were nylon.

So far that's a suggestion. Until I spend $20 and test the theory, it remains that. Unless someone has? Two years a many miles I haven't needed the spare on the two 01's.

Perhaps, moly is not the best lube? Suspicion is that it migrates throughout the motor and softens the nylon drive gear. Mobilgrease 28 aviation grease is now the best lube to use for the BBS02 and BBSHD: http://electricbike-blog.com/2015/12...and-not-heard/

Done. Went ahead and got some molly and packed it down. She runs right nice now....

DrDave,
Mine were adequately lubed but from Bruno's suggestions and also from Karl, I just went ahead. Can't hurt, so why not was my conclusion.

Motor noises...
So I probably have maybe 150 total miles on my BBS02. Today as I was coming up to the crest of a long incline I started to hear some noise out of the motor that sound almost like a rattle then a hissing sound almost like I was losing air pressure from my tires. It was coming from the motor. After I reached the crest it stopped.
Any ideas?
