This is probably going to be one of the dumbest questions posted on endless sphere today. If you are using a mid drive motor in your E bike. When you change your gearing while you are moving along, does that change the gear ratio going to the mid drive motor? I’ve built several rear hub E bikes. I’ve also built a scooter and a go cart with a direct drive brushless motor. To change the gearing ratio on those I would need to take off the chain and swap out either the motor sprocket or the wheel sprocket in order to get more torque or more top speed. I’m learning about mid drive motors and want to try that in my mongoose dolomite fat tire bike that I recently bought. I don’t know much about mid drive motors hence the crazy noob question. I’m most likely going to be using lunar cycles 72 V 7500 W mid drive motor. I have no need or desire to use PAS or pedal assist. This is strictly going to be throttle only. So I’m assuming when I change the gears on my derailleur to go from gear 1 to gear 7 this will change my gear ratio on my mid drive motor and give me more torque or more top speed. Is that correct? Also would it be safe to assume that you wouldn’t have to necessarily change gears at all and just leave it in the 1 or 7 gear? Thanks for any advice.

Yes you are correct on all counts.
One caveat though, while you would indeed not necessarily have to change gears at all, in practice if you are lugging the motor uphill in 7th gear this would be a lot like slowly driving a manual transmission car uphill in the highest gear, i.e. it's hell on the drivetrain and could burn out the motor or break components on the drivetrain. So don't do that.

Tried to jump start 52v 28AH triangle battery at the recommendation of Luna tech(trouble ticket open). No response for two days.
jumpstart procedure did not work to get battery to take a charge. Next steps?
Brand new battery only used once for 20 min (after full overnight charge) before it shut down. Installed on bike with BBSHD.
Showing only 2volt output currently , will not power display or luna volt meter.

Each time a new reply is sent it moves it to the back of the email list since it is ordered by oldest first and adding a new email makes it "new". Most support ticket systems work this way.

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but searching the forum I had no luck finding an answer. Just installed BBS02 kit with C961 display. I understand that display won't read battery voltage accurately. All I see is "not accurately" when I do searches. Anyone know how far off it is? Is it off 50% or 10% or something I can use as a general guide? Or can I use it at all? Love the kit otherwise. Many thanks! Butch

It's not accurate at all for 52v batteries. A 48v will show a relativity accurate gauge but won't account for things like voltage sag, so in the event where you only have 1-2 bars left, you may suddenly shut down in the middle of a ride from pulling too much load/power at low battery. (30%-20% left)
For 52v, it's just not accurate at all. At about 0% battery, it will show like almost full bars meaning you think you have more than half left to go but you're really at nearly zero and about to shut down any second without warning.
Just upgrade to a colour display. It's definitely worth it to be able to read voltages instead of using gimmicky bars and % gauges. When you have a voltage reading, you can literally tell how the battery is doing by judging it's sag under load.
For example if I'm at 50v which is about hailfish capacity for most 13-14ah batteries, my voltage sag under load while riding could drop as low at 46v, which would show up in the display and I could see that I'm 3v away from hitting the cut-off (43v) and reduce the throttle to ride more conservatively.Last edited by HIGHVOLTAGE; 07-12-2018, 01:20 PM.

I just wanted to follow up in case anyone is searching these Apex cases that may have a similar issue. In reference to my Apex chain breaking I believe I found the problem. This is my first bike with this type of suspension with a true swing arm. After consulting the rock shock manual I found that it was set to only 100 PSI. The shock PSI should be at least equal to your body weight. I weigh 230 pounds. I believe the travel and lack of tension was what contributed or even caused the chain to flex and break. I have made adjustments and had no further issues. Fingers crossed! Thanks for your help and support.

Hi,
logged about 150 miles on the Apex and i am starting to experience some vibration in the motor. I assume this is due to the internal gears needing to be lubed. Do you have this procedure? I believe this is the Bafang Ultra. If this is recommended can you share what type of lube to use? Thanks

Thanks but that video doesn't really help with a real tear down. Its already torn! LOL From what i have been reading this is fairly common no? That may have been on the BBS02 perhaps.. I might just take it over to Seattle E-bike and have them take a look. They do sell LUNA kits... just not sure if they have seen an Ultra before :) It would be good to add to the list if this indeed is an issue. I will report back. thanks for the response!!

My 3 month old battery is failing. The voltage shows 50.5V on my 48V battery. When going up a hill, it drops to 48.5V and then the motor cuts off. In order to power up the bike again (BBS02 motor), I have to unplug the battery from the motor for 10 seconds and then plug it back in and power up the bike (otherwise, bike will not turn on). The bike then goes a little further and shuts back down. If I go back to flat ground, it lasts a little while longer but then starts cutting off with even a slight hill. I have the same exact symptoms on a second motor I'm testing with.
I just replaced the BMS with a 40A unit, suitable for over 1000 Watts. The battery cuts off at 500W at first and then even at 300W. Does this mean that the battery cells are dead? I tested all the cell groups, and they all ready 4V x 12 = 48V.

Well there's a stumper. Conventional thinking says it's either the bms or the cells are damaged. But if you replaced bms should be good and if your cells are balanced should be good.
How confident are you the cell bank testing was accurate? Was the replacement bms same type? Were these same issues you saw before replacing bms? Do you have another battery you can use on the bike to see if issue persists? Can you do a load test on the pack with a discharger?

I am using a 13s 40a bms, the same wiring harness as the original. I had the same issue before changing the BMS, so the new BMS did not help anything. When I first bought the battery, it operated normally. I have tested the battery on two different bikes, and it behaves the same on each.
I had the same exact occurance happening with a second battery, so I'm suspecting that one of the bike motors is damaging the battery. My other bike has never had any issue with it's own battery.
What's the best way to load test the cells? I tested each set of pins (1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, etc) and they all shows exactly the same voltage. I would think if the cells were bad, the voltage would quickly drop to 42V and then the motor would cut off. Yet, they are only dropping to 48.5V when the motor cuts off. I am not seeing any massive voltage spike.
I will be repacing the BMS02 controller on the bike that I suspect is damaging the batteries, but I really didn't want to buy a new battery. I have two of these batteries with the same exact issue!

Well? Will it? What will the output be? I have the usual kind of frame battery, continuous output is 20 amps, 40 pulse/max.
Again, 36 volts. I’d prefer this particular kit because of the shifting cutoff option.

Went to mount the controller and ran into an issue. The motor cable leaving the controller is only 6 inches long. And the one leaving the motor is maybe 10 inches.there is no place to mount this controller and be able to plug in the motor. This controller would probably work with a rear mount motor that is fixed an does not move. So did I get the wrong accessory kit with the wrong controller?

I just installed the BBSHD-KIT (order # 559790) and the LUNA Wolf 52 V 13.5 ah battery (order #56154). The battery charger you sent (Basic 52V lithium charger) does not fit the charging port on the Wolf 52V. The battery port is 2 circles female and the battery charger is one circle male. Is there an adaptor you can send? And/or which battery charger works with the Wolf 52V?

If the charger is ordered as a package deal with the battery we include an adapter, a reverse barrel to xt60. If not then we have no way of knowing you need said adapter. You can email us and we can figure out some kind of special order for it. Might need like five bucks for shipping.
Alternately you can just cut off the barrel and crimp or solder an xt60 pigtail connector on it.

I want to convert a 2017 Specialized Langster Pro single speed bike (https://www.specialized.com/us/en/langster-pro/p/106424 ) to electric and after reading all I could find regarding single speed conversion it seems it would be better to choose a rear hub motor instead of an mid-drive, the main reason being low reliability of a mid-drive in this setup with low rpms/high torque.
I have 3 questions:
1. Do you also advise to go for a rear hub motor instead of a BBS02 mid drive? (I'm not considering a front hub motor for aesthetics)
2. If I'm going on the hub motor path, can you recommend me a solution that would fit my 120mm (horizontal) drop out (narrower rear axle witdh)? The only solution I found so far is with a Q100 motor (https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=48848) but maybe I can purchase the complete kit from you.
3. I was thinking to purchase the Mighty Mini battery pack (https://lunacycle.com/batteries/pack...-6ah-3-pounds/ ) but the hub motor is 36V - can you also provide a version of Mighty Mini for 36v ? :)

My favorite ebikes to ride are my stupidly low geared single speeds. I am fake pedaling at any speed above 6mph.
When I am going fast in heavy traffic, I often pedal at a ridiculously highest cadence to try and make it look like I am operating solely on human power (my motor is hidden). I'm about to pull the trigger on a BBSHD kit + Wolf battery but had a few quick questions about battery connections.
1. It appears that the BBSHD uses an Anderson connector, but the Luna Wolf battery pack uses a spark-suppressed XT90s connector. What is the best way to connect this battery pack to the BBSHD?
2. The specific cell option I want for the Luna Wolf (Panasonic GA) is not provided as an option when selecting BBSHD kit options. If I order it separately (not as part of the kit, but on the same order) will I get the appropriate adapter for connecting the Wolf to the BBSHD?
3. The Luna E-Pump has multiple connector options. If I select the XT90 connector option for the pump, to use the pump would I just need to disconnect the main BBSHD power from the Wolf Pack and then hook the battery's XT90 connector directly to the pump?
4. If I order the Luna Advanced 52v charger with the Wolf, will the charger come with a barrel-to-XT60 adapter for connecting directly to the Wolf's charge lead? I believe the answer is yes based off your answer to mona above, but wanted to clarify.

The best way to connect it would be to cut off the anderson and make the connection as described on our battery documentation.

This typically involves crimping or soldering. We do sell an adapter for plug and play if you prefer, though hardwiring it is more ideal. Generally you want to use as few connectors and adapters as possible.
Yes that is correct you can just plug discharge from battery to pump if you have xt90 on both.
The advanced charger has xt60. The wolf also has xt60 on it for charging. No adapter is necessary. Mona did not buy an advanced she bought a basic charger, basic chargers need an adapter to make it xt60, but the higher end chargers already use xt60.
