    Hi -

I'm interested in buying the Bafang Ultra drive from you to go on a custom frame a friend of mine is going to build for me... but he told me he can only work in steel - is it possible to use the Ultra with a steel frame?

    Thanks

Hello. I'm robhu's aforementioned frame builder.. thought I'd come directly and see if you could help clear this up for me.

Plan is to build a new frame specifically for the Ultra. I can see the motor can come with an aluminium housing plate that( I'm assuming) the motor bolts into. For simplicity and strength I wanted to make this a structural part of the new frame - but being aluminium, I can't braze it to the frame. I was wondering if there were plans for a steel mounting plate for frame builders who work in steel - or if not, drawings available to help people manufacture their own?

Here is a (beautifully crafted!) example of what I mean : https://www.rodbikes.com/images/gall...ery.php?id=440

Yes the Ultras can come with the aluminum plate, yes it bolts onto that plate.

The plate does not necessarily need to be made of aluminum.

You could make a cad file from the original and have a copy made of steel by a machine shop.

Far as I know you don't even necessarily need an external mounting plate. You can probably just make the frame already have the mountpoints built into it in such a way that makes the motor mount directly into the frame.

steelycycles I'm working on the thing! I have a build thread here:

I want to modify a steel frame for a Bafang Ultra. You can buy an aluminum housing for the motor to weld onto an aluminum frame but I question my ability to do that and don't want to pay someone to do it ( I want this to be MY build). I also want to be able to repair and modify the frame as I see fit and I feel much more

Would you mind making a thread detailing your process?

New little display is 1199 to get in. Two new choices, speed pole and some other pole set at one. What do I do here?

Cockpit from hell, but it goes like hell so who cares.

Oh, and super cool is how it stands proud and goes over everything else. The other on off button was tight to the bar and hard to get things under it.

Don't think any pole stuff on any display does anything, that should be set by controller.

How does Luna get the speed sensor working on the huge gap that comes with the Banana? I can find vague reference to the spacer I need to get my speed sensor closer to the magnet for my BBSHD, but I don't see a part anywhere.

Don't know how shop does it but you can do this. Wrap chainstay with silicone tape, wrapping enough times so that portion sticks out. Then put sensor bracket on the raised portion. Be sure to use the slots on the bracket for zip ties to hold in place firmly

Hi. Looking to get some ebike brakes. Seen the Shimano ones you have in the store but no sensor for the cut out. Are you guys able to modify those M355 brakes so I can use them on my ebike? Build is my own. Thanks.

That wouldn't be possible at this time unfortunately. Sorry :(

Ok. So no other options for me?

I have a BBSHD that is slipping when I try to pedal. The throttle and pedal assist work fine, but the pedals just slip when I try to put any power down the old fashioned way, leaving me with a bike that is 100% battery powered. I changed the clutch/freewheel with a new one and zero change - that’s not the issue. What other problem does the motor have that would cause this?

This has nothing to do with chainline, chain tension, worn parts (this is a new bike). I’m a bike mechanic, the issue is I can’t get the cranks to engage at all, when I pedal it’s like they’re not attached to anything and they just spin freely in both directions. The only thing moving the bike is the pinion gear running off throttle or pas when I ‘pedal’. Sounds like a warrantee issue if replacing the clutch did nothing and you guys can’t think of anything else.

You sure you put the clutch in the right way when you replaced it?

I have these on all six of my bikes: https://www.tektro.com/products.php?p=35

I have found these to be bombproof, and I am very tough on my equipment. I find them very easy to install and service.

I had this happen to me once with a chain tensioner that was installed improperly. It was very frustrating! Once I had the chain tensioner positioned correctly, everything was hunky-dory.

Some things that you could look at:
      (1) proper chain tensioner or derailleur installation,
      (2) serviceability of chain tensioner or derailleur,
      (3) proper chain length,
      (4) worn chain,
      (5) worn cassette or freewheel,
      (6) worn chain ring,
      (7) derailleur adjustment.

Again, I have spent way too may hours fiddling with my chain length to get things working nicely. You have to have both the chain length and tension within spec, as well as drivetrain components that are properly lubricated and not overly worn.

I can't imagine that this has anything to do with the motor, but I could be wrong. Since I believe this to be a problem with the mechanical drivetrain, an LBS could help with a diagnosis. Please post back on here with the solution when you find it.

Thanks for clarifying. So not a problem with the mechanical drivetrain, then. Still, please post the solution here when you figure it out.

Did it ever work okay? Did any interesting event occur at the time it started failing you?

Yes it worked fine for the past 9 months or so. The pedals just went loose one day.

Did you replace the steel gear when you replaced the clutch? Sometimes when the clutch fails it grinds away the teeth on the steel gear. In this event, even if the clutch is replaced it will not have anything to connect with due to the worn down teeth.

Hi all. I got the wolf 52v battery and the std52v charger. And it has the attached plug which the wolf doesn’t have. Should I have been shipped an adapter? Thanks

Yes, you should have. We'll have one shipped out asap.

Hello I have a question about the BBSHD, on the order page there is the option to bundle the mini 30t chainring for a little discount, but no option to bundle the 36t chainring, which of course is the one I want.

      Hello!
      I have the cyclone 3k.
How do i remove/replace the cog mounted onto the motor?

      Thanks!

      Update:
Spoke with Seb, If the motor has been used, the keyway will be stuck, get a screw driver and gently level (leveling the keyway) the motor shaft and the cog, and wiggle the cog.

Probably need to email us attn: Seb in the heading for that one. IIRC you need to mess with the keyway.

Hi LunaCycle, I'm interested in this bike that you guys offered: https://lunacycle.com/luna-lone-wolf-roam-ebike/

Is it possible to order one with Small size and a different color?

Sorry, unless it's a size/color offered on the site we don't have access to that frame at this time.

Hi Guys. I bought a BBSHD kit in April/May (order # 50632) and it's been working great. But yesterday my charger (52v 300w luna charger) stopped working. It doesn't light up or do anything. Is there anything I can do for basic troubleshooting? I'm not an electrical engineer and I don't have any skills in troubleshooting circuits/power issues. I would greatly appreciate some assistance in getting this resolved. My bike is dead in the water. Thanks!

Edit: Yes it's the fuse. And of course it's been soldered down.

Probably a fuse. Does yours have the older style with outer fuse or the type with the fuse on the inside? Either way I'd check that. The fuse is a F6AL250V if you need another.

I have been reading some of the builds thread and ppl recommended to not mount the battery on the back rack because the vibration during the ride will destroy it. How is that different than mounting the battery shark pack in the bike's triangle's frame? wouldn't the sturdiness of the frame cause the same vibration as well? Thanks.

Not sure where you read that but it heavily depends on a lot of factors such as which type of battery you're using and how secured you have it. Some people just mount it with the base plate and leave it at that. So if you want to avoid any issues, make sure you have it strapped in tightly with straps/velcro/ziptie on top of using the base mounting plate.

The Shark Pack is pretty notorious for having a shoddy case, so go with something like a Wolf Pack instead and you won't have this issue at all since the entire battery is potted.

Well I bought a bike with a Luna BBSHD from someone and the bike drives fine cept a few concerns. I run a 52v battery have the Luna Full Color Display DPC-18 also on it. I have the programming software and cable and run the BBSHD52vLimitless flash. Its on a Trek Marlin 5.

      Problem/concern
#1 I get an error code 04 on the display I read disconnect the throttle and see if it goes away. It doesn't I have even power cycled the bike removed battery etc the code will not go away but throttle seems to work fine and pedal assist.... No pins are broken on the harness either.
#2 Top speed seems to be about 30 mph on a flat surface 29er bike and yes the display is set to 29er rim seems low for a 52V battery and the limitless flash (appx 1600 watts)
#3 The bike makes a clicking noise/slight resistance (not much but alittle) when backing the bike up from the motor area not loud not hard to back up or anything but it seems odd?

I am a DIY guy and know how to use a voltmeter and have built all my other Hub motor bikes my own battery packs modifications to controllers aka shunt mods etc.

If you have error 4 even with the throttle completely disconnected I would suspect an issue with the harness, or maybe the controller. If the issue goes away when you remove the throttle I would try replacing the throttle.

Try checking the speed on a gps app on your phone. Assuming you have confirmation, check that you have a fully charged battery, maybe try another profile in controller. Also keep in mind if you are running an aftermarket chainring like a 30T this will have a huge impact on top speed as it will be optimized for torque over top speed.

All BBSxx motor have resistance backing up the bike. You are moving multiple gears in the opposite direction it is primarily designed to go. It will do it, but it's not going to be happy about it.

The error code is in the DPC-18 (I think) information panel it does say at the top Error memory... I have changed the flash to the BBSHD 52V Limitless flash. The code is there weather the thottle is plugged in or not but the throttle seems to still work fine. I think it's the luna full twist. Also the sprocket I think is a 42 or 46 tooth. The seller gave me an unused 46 tooth and the extra stuff when I bought the bike.

If Error Code 04 shows up with the throttle unplugged, then it sounds like it may be an issue with the main harness. I'd recommend to try replacing that first.
