bob@rtjackson.com in reference to Case #73622.
Good morning, my 52V, 20ah, Luna triangle battery died. It has a loose ground connection I can wiggle, both the charge ground and discharge ground. I use the bike for hunting and the season is over in a week so my issue is urgent to me. I have to cut into the case to fix whatever is loose or broken. How far into the case do I have to cut to reach the connection? What do I have to watch out for. This bike, by the way, is so cool. 640 miles on rough forest service roads no problems till now.
Digging into it, should I remove 1/2 of shrink wrap then peel back fiberglass to access contact?
While waiting I cut 1/2 the shrink wrap, pulled back fiberglass and see connections are good bright and shiny where they attach to the circuit board so I assume the circuit board is broken. Circuit board may be over my head. To get it to work intermittently I put on the charger, wiggle wires and it works. Remove charger and it works for a few wire wiggles then quits and will not come back on unless I use charger again. I'm beginning to think I am screwed for the rest of hunting season. Your thoughts? If you can't help, I'll need phone # and address of the folks that can repair it.

    Thank you for your help,

Can some one point me to the right charger to purchase to provide longevity for my sondors original 36v 12.8Ah from luna cycle.

Evening! After about 1400 miles of problem-free riding, my bbs02 bike started acting weird all of a sudden.
    • With a full charge, the power to the motor will cut out at speeds around 20 mph and above on flat terrain in pedal assist mode, sooner on hills. The display will stay on, but the wattage drops to zero and there is no "push" for a few seconds, then the motor will kick back in.
    • Sometimes, the bike will turn off entirely when standing still at a light.
After reading other people's posts about similar problems, here's what I've checked so far:
    • I've checked the battery connectors for signs of wear or dirt. All looks clean and in great condition.
    • I've tested the battery on another bike. No problems.
    • I've checked the cables for loose wires. All seems good.
    • I've checked the unit's programming. All seems to be in order.
    • I've disconnected the brake sensors. Problem persists.
    • I've tried using throttle only. Problem persists.
This makes me think it's the controller. Is there a good way to troubleshoot a controller short of replacing it with a new one? What are some of the tell-tale behaviors of a fried controller?

    Thanks a lot!

I recently purchased the BBSHD kit for my Canondale Hybrid. I did this to replace the BBS02 kit that had 2700 miles on it. I had Zac do the install and he did a first class job, as well as answering my questions. I appreciate getting his name from you. When I charge the 52 volt battery after a ride i charge it until the green light goes on. On the evening before a ride I top it off and leave it plugged in overnight to balance charge the battery. Is there any harm in charging it this way? Do I have to balance charge the battery for its entire life, or just for the first few times. Thanks for your time.

Sounds like you're doing fine with charging the pack. Balancing shouldn't be needed too often as long as the pack isn't frequently pulled down to empty. I balance mine once in a while but particularly if I notice the finish voltage settling under 57V for 52V pack.

Main thing to avoid, IMO is not allowing a fully charged pack to sit for long periods of time. Overnight, day or two isn't a problem but longer than that burn off a little to reduce the SOC a bit. That seems to help my packs last longer with less increase in IR (internal resistance) over time.

so I was sent a bogus c/n300 charger with the luna trike THAT DOESNT WORK { the green light is stuck on } and was told it takes an RCA charger ..whatever that is .....so I asked luna if they PLEASE tell me the model # of the RCA charger and where I can purchase it ...but .... that's too much to ask for ...so here I am ...DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHAT CHARGER CHARGES THE LUNA TRIKE PANASONIC 52V BATTERY ? AND WHERE CAN I GET ONE ?

Thank you for replying to my earlier question. However, I don't know what IMO and SOC are. Thanks again.

IMO (in my opinion) SOC (State of charge)

This may be a bit long-winded for this particular thread, let me know if I should break it out into separate posts sprinkled around the forum:

I have a Taga 2.0 Cargo bike, it's great for my kid, breaks down for transport easily, and holds insane amounts of groceries etc. I want to improve the ease of climbing hills under load, so I am looking at an electric bike kit and looking for input- the bike has 20 inch wheels in a tadpole configuration, so front hub motors are right out. It has a 3 speed Shimano Nexus Inter-3, which would scream BBS-HD, but the dimensions around the bottom bracket are iffy whether the BBS-HD's 12mm clearance will fit. Cyclone isn't recommended for first time builders, or that would be the route I would investigate further. Rear track style dropouts are 135mm, so the double-speed/double reduction hub motor, which seems like an ideal fit for this application, is out unless there's a way to swap the freehub for something narrower. The remaining candidates are the 750W Geared hub motor, the 1000W DD hub, and the Smart Pie v5. I can't seem to find torque numbers for these motors, which complicates the decision.

The cargo bike will, under load, be pushing 400+ lbs (240 lb rider, up to 150 lbs in cargo area, 65-70 lb bike.), the only saving grace is the wheel is the relatively puny 20 inch size, so relative torque is aided there, top speed isn't really a concern as speeds above 15-20 get terrifying quickly in this thing on downhills.

Fundamentally, the question is: What are the torque numbers for the 750W Geared hub, the 1000W DD hub, and the Smart Pie V5, and which if any of them will be able to handle heavy loads on a 20 inch wheel at relatively low speeds?

    Comment

Hi Barry. I would not recommend a DD hub with 400 lbs load, even on small rims that's just asking for trouble. We're actually out of rear geared :(
You should be able to use BBSHD though.. might need to use some spacers if there's an intrusive chainstays but most of the time you can work around that, even if you ultimately need to exchange it for a longer size and more spacers. Might take a little longer but should be doable. Feel free to take a pic and give some measurements for a bit more feedback

I bought the bbs02 kit last year but didn't install it until this summer. I am trying to figure out how to turn on the instantaneous power option of the c965 display. The setup never shows a PO option
I read somewhere that some c965 don't have the power display. My order was 13390, September 2016. Should I stop trying to make this display show Power?

          I don't think the 965 has that.

The Luna product page links to the manual which clearly shows power in Watts and tells how to enable this option. The blog on this site also says the c965 has a watt meter.

I paid extra for this display specifically for a watt meter so that I could gauge how much to detune the bbs02 for my typical trips that all involve hills which I have measured between 10 and 15% grades, the purpose of that being to maximize longevity of the motor. Maybe I should suggest to Luna that its product page is very misleading.

I was on Luna's site reading about that 60 volt triangle battery. Is the voltage to high for a BBSHD? How about the Ludicrous version?

I wonder if it is the case that motors are rated for a certain maximum power, so that raising the system voltage could be compensated for with a corresponding reduction in current, resulting in a higher top speed and less torque.

BTW I was looking at synonyms for torque and I found a good one: "rotating force".

A 60v nominal battery will blow the BBSHD controller, sorry. This includes Ludi controllers.

He's fine we've already worked out getting him a replacement. It is a bummer that this trike uses a nonstandard connector though, especially RCA. I'm sure you or me could stick a multimeter on an RCA to test output without shorting it but I can't ask a customer to do that, super tricky.

My order seems to be stuck in "shipping label printed" status for the last week. I've tried the Fed Ex tracking link, and I see there is no progress. From reading you shipping page, it appears that the carrier has not picked up the package to ship. If my order hasn't been picked up, can we switch to UPS? . My order number is 38428.
        Thanks, Paul

This is for technical questions only please see email support for shipment questions. But basically we cannot switch it to UPS as we are contractually obligated to use Fedex at the moment. Sorry for the delay, we should be shipping soon. BTW I noticed you have used an invalid address, which includes a PO box. We will attempt to ship to the address you have provided but please keep in mind it is the purchaser's responsibility to give us an address capable of receiving a shipment and having it signed for.

I have a brand new Panasonic 52V battery that has never been connected to a bike or charger. With the power switch in the on position I measure a healthy 52V (assume this is 50-80% storage charge and it will go up some after changing). In the off position I measure 26V. Is something wrong with the wiring in the battery like only half the cells are linked to the on/off switch?
        Thanks,
        Reed

Switches on many hardcase models are like that. Low enough that you are below LVC on the controller but not zero V. It's determined by the BMS on a switched BMS. Some other packs use a switch that functions independently of the BMS and these would give you zero.

As you can see from the attached pictures, the frame isn't standard. My concern is the 12mm clearance between the bafang BB and the body of the motor. I haven't been able to get good measurements because of the curve, beyond "close to the limit"

          Barry:
Ok yeah I can see how that could be problematic. How comfortable you with the idea of using an angle grinder to give you the extra clearance you need if it came to that? Just a couple notches on either side and you would probably be fine, just take care not to hit any welds and you won't lose much if any structural integrity.
