I have been using my BBSHD on pedal assist only. Today I hooked up a thumb throttle and can only get very limited low power. Is there a setting I'm not aware of?

Did you modify the programming settings at all? If you have a programming cable. I would check the settings. Also check the display to see if you added any speed limitations.

I haven't changed anything. Don't have a program cable. Only settings I seem to be able to access are the 1-5 power levels

I would recommend measuring with a wattmeter to confirm one way or another, then checking the power cabling and phase wire connectors for a high resistance connection (it would probably be partially plugged in and/or melted). Typically if this is happening it would be happening both on pas and throttle though, so would be good to confirm it is happening at all first.

My recently installed BBSHD has about 50 miles on it. Previously it was smooth as silk, no creaks or squeaks. The last 10 miles it started creaking loud on the downstroke of the right pedal. Basically once per pedal-rotation with a couple of minor mini-creaks after the loud one. (Mini-creaks also 1x per pedal-rotation.)

Interestingly there's no creak at all when motor engages for pedal-assist - maybe because it's consistent torque? But I've tried standing on the pedals to give bursts of torque while motor going, and still no creak. (I don't have throttle so can't test that). I've tightened the chainring bolts, removed/greased/retightened the pedals, removed/re-tightened BBS nut and black lock-ring, and removed/retightened the cranks. Seems like the fact that it doesn't happen during pedal assist is significant.

QUESTION 1: Ideas about what else to try to eliminate the creak? Should I take everything apart and tighten again? Put on some proper Shimano cranks? Try putting one of these in to reduce lateral play? https://california-ebike.com/shop/ba...pacers-set-3/? Any other ideas?

QUESTION 2: There's a tiny bit of lateral play (<1mm) in the shaft that goes through the bottom bracket - I've read threads about that and seems like under 1mm there is normal and acceptable. Does this lateral play need to be addressed? Or is that a tolerable amount?

Always check the seat/ post. The prob being the creak is transmitted though out the frame. So clean, lube or lock-tite may be useful to narrow it down.

It is either the play you mention in the bb or the cranks have deformed from not being properly tightened. Addressing both issues at the same time doesn't cost much. Some shimano cranks only cost like $30 and are a nice upgrade. For the BB, there should not be play. I don't know specficially what you mean by lateral play, spacers/washers should be used if you mean a gap where the black triangular bracket meets the motor. 1mm clipped washers can be had from many stores. Crank arm puller for the crank. Then remove freewheel from the crank with a freewheel removal tool. Pretty sure you need a single speed removal tool such as Park Tool FR-6

Hi, I have a LUNA SHARK 52V 13.5A pack here that seems to be shutting down at an unexpected level. Only a few months old and never abused. My LUNA Color LCD show's 47.8V at idle when its shutting off. What is the LVC on this pack? Can you please provide some good documentation for this pack, such as a proper voltage chart we can reference? THANKS!!!

What are you using it with? The LVC of the controller is typically set higher than pack LVC. For example BBSxx is often ~42. Pack LVC is lower, like 38.

Important to keep in mind that when you get this close to completely empty you are going to see a lot more voltage sag than you will at higher state of charge. Likely you are seeing sag momentarily dropping to below LVC (whether on pack or controller), then it cuts and the voltage bounces back a bit to mid-40s.

Another consideration is if it's cold out, I don't know what temp you saw this at but cold temps cause more sag than you would otherwise see. Please see this document for reference https://electricbike.com/forum/forum...li-ion-battery

If you have any doubts you can always do a controlled discharge test at room temp by hooking the battery up to some incandescent lights with a wattmeter between it. Start at fully charged and see how much capacity you see before cutout.

I like bafang because it is relatively easy to install but afraid that on my bike frame it will be to low to the ground. Cyclone mini looks more compact so I think it will be more suitable for my frame. Could you give me any suggestions to help to choose.

If you got the kelly from luna it is wired for cyclone, not bafang. While it might be theoretically possible to make it work with bafang it would take a lot of hard work. I would not recommend it, especially if you happen to be a beginner.

Unless you want a serious challenge, stick with the cyclone. Really even usage with Cyclone was only recommended for advanced builders as you need the patience and knowhow to wire it up, need to be comfortable doing your own wiring, and the on/off switch needs wired correctly or it will not work.

I was removing the connectors from the motor. No battery pack was connected. When I cut the connectors off I got a large spark. Checked the wires and it read 8 volts coming from the motor without a battery attached. No harm done but keep the wires separated until I completed the process. Does the motor have residual power stored somewhere after the battery is disconnected?

Thanks for the info on the 52 volt but I want do do an identical build on my bike as my wife's so when we travel are parts and chargers are interchangeable in case there are problems. Then plan is to use the ebike to get around places when on the road in our motor home. Park the motorhome and use the ebikes. Sure beats draging a car around.

My recently purchased BBSHD from Luna has been a great install. But the Throttle only does anything from about the half way point on. It comes on like an off on switch, and ramps up to full as you turn it, so no low end power at all from 0 to about halfway. I cannot ride at any speed lower than about 14mph. This is with pedal assist at zero. Pedal assist works pretty well by comparison. Is this a tuning issue or component? I ordered it with the hot rod tune, but this is not what I expected...

My 52v basic plastic charger only shows an output of 58.1v. 1) should I be concerned considering Im charging a brand new battery? 2)Is there a way to adjust this on these cheapo chinese chargers?

How was output measured, did you use a multimeter directly on it? Is it a new battery, a new charger?

Generally I don't think plastic chargers are adjustable but it probably varies depending on the manufacturer.

Since its a shark pack with the barrel plug, I inserted the positive pin on a multi-meter into the hole on the barrel plug and touched the negative to the outer shell. Shows 58.0 to 58.1 volts. Brand new (4 cycles now) 14Ah shark pack, brand new cheap plastic charger Manufacturer is "Made in China". Just worried I wont get balanced cells at 95% charge. I do plan to spring for a Luna mini soon.

Edit: After a full charge on my battery I checked the output again (without unplugging it from the wall after the charge) and it showed 58.7 to 58.8 volts. Something tells me that the charger actually needed a load on it to get it going to full capacity. The battery itself showed 58.6v after this charge so I guess I dont really have a problem after all. Still gonna get the Luna mini or advanced for the 80/90/100% charge switch.

I am curious, customer owns a 48V 13Ah GA shark pack, wants a second pack, will a 52V version of the same style shark pack fit his original mounts? He wants to be able to hot-swap the batteries while on a long trip thanks!

Depends when he bought the shark. The mounts changed recently.

There's a note in the hardcase battery doc about the update. It was some much needed improvements to the original shark design, incorporating the feedback we have given over the years. The two main things you gotta look out for on a shark are breaking those little plastic tabs on the case (thus we often recommend reinforcement to cradle/frame with bungees or velcro) and the contacts getting mechanical fatigue (thus needing to be repositioned as detailed on doc).

The revision fixes both of these issues, by making the contacts fit better, adding another contact for redundancy, and using reinforced plastic on case tabs.

However a side effect of this is that it is not backwards compatible with earlier shark cradles. Anything from around December 2017 onwards could potentially use the newer style. Feel free to contact us and ask us to check our stock before ordering if you need to make sure one way or the other. Easiest way to tell is to check the contacts, new style has 5 slots vs. old style which has 4. While I cannot guarantee all new shark will have this style it is likely to be the case going forward.

OK, I am well on my way to mounting the BBSHD on my bike when I ran into an issue. I purchased the right hand throttle for my build but find that I now cannot use my Shimano Deore rear gear shift as it runs into the large ring on the throttle. Any suggestions other than going to a thumb throttle?

I've got a shimano M8000 (deore xt) right side shifter that I went ahead, flipped it over and put on the left. I definitely prefer the levers on top anyway - mine doesn't have the display so it really made no difference with that. I've got a long moto background so left side transmission is easier to make autonomic for me.

Try a left side throttle now that you no longer need the front derailleur, and the accompanying shifter on the left bar.

I have tried most every throttle that Luna offers for both Bafang and Cyclone. I also got a few from Grin. That left twist from Luna is the best of the lot.
