How do you know when you need to grease the nylon gear

We have a Calfee tandem with the BBSHD kit installed, we are very happy with the performance. We only ride on the road and have over 1500 miles on the bike with the motor. We typically run in level two of 9 levels. I keep reading about tearing the unit down and greasing the nylon gear. How often does that need to be done and how do you know when to do it. My plan is to buy a second motor and remove the original motor then rebuild it at my least re.I only want to have to do this every year or so.

If it isn't broke, don't break it. There's some reports of the nylon gear being wrecked by the wrong formulation of grease. I wouldn't be in much hurry to tear into something that's working fine unless there's an obvious need to do so. Lower PAS levels may practically insure trouble free long term service.

Thanks, that makes good sense, however is there a way to tell if the gear needs greasing. Noise etc.?

Because it's nylon I'm not certain that gear ever "needs" greasing? I believe other metal to metal parts will become noisy and require lubrication long before outward signs/sounds from the nylon gear?

If nylon gear strips/fails it's likely not related to lack of lubrication. Usually excessive power too long and often....

There is a potential area in the nylon gear that may need attention. I had a problem with the one way bearing in the nylon gear slipping occasionally. The motor would run but not power the crank. I regreased the area, and it worked better, for a while. I did have to change the apparently, visually unworn gear soon after. This was on bbs02a. The later models have a redesigned gear pinion and plate that are heavier duty.
in regreasing that side, grease has gotten to motor windings. Do not know if that is going to create a problem Yes, if not broken don't fix (break) it.
