    Luna's Prototype Display...please give ideas

So luna is currently working on our own display for the bbshd and new bafang ultra drive.

What are some of the feature sets you guys would really like to see on this unit?

    Speed
    battery guage (amp hour based)
    motor rpm
    pedal assist level
    average speed
    volt meter
    watt output

Those are the basic settings i quickly listed... now what more advanced setting would you like to see?

What about design of the display itself?

    Color? or black and white?

    Small or large?

    integrated with light or throttle?

    touch screen or not?

    Open source or not?

    GPS

I think providing thumb buttons for PAS is a strong feature. And safer, compared to a display which requires you to ride one handed to push buttons on the main display.

Dual profile switching with a jumper or other discrete on-bike hardware configuration change, to allow limiting speed when needed on powerful kits, could be useful as well. Maybe use an app. But not a direct user menu item, more of a setup feature, so bike can be easily built one way or the other, or reconfigured for new locales, without obviously violating the rules. Not sure the required method, but the feature would be appreciated.

Watt hour counting. Basic, like Batman, etc.

For a stretch goal, monitor watt hours vs pack voltage range, have the controller learn actual pack capacity, and use that table, with that ride's energy consumption rate, to show ESTIMATED MILES REMAINING. It won't be right, but it would put simple bike battery level meters to shame.

Put a HDMI port in the display.

      1. The display should have an HDMI port. An HDMI port has enough channels that all the connections could be run through the display.
      2. The current displays have pigtails of cables coming out of them. If a wire gets cut, or connector stops working, the whole display needs to be replaced. With a port system, only the cable or adapter needs to be replaced.
      3. The display should have update-able firmware, so enhancements and bug fixes can be posted for customers to use to fix their own displays, rather than sending them in for repair, or replacement.
      4. The display should be able to control power by motor speed, or wheel speed. Speed limits could be input directly.
      5. PAS should be configured in the display, so that one style of PAS could be used for the street, and another style for the trails.

I fully agree with you. Pigtails are for pigs. I just squished the throttle wire when plugging it in for checking. Fortunately, I never use it, only PAS. And, all connectors on the BBS02 should be stouter than pigtails, same model for everything including HWBS (hidden wire brake sensor).

I think GPS would be nice. For me, I'd like something that is easily removable. Not such an easy feature with all the wires and throttle. Maybe something like a snap on (magnetic?) display. Waterproof would also be a key feature.

An oldie, but a goodie: wheel size in mm, instead of discrete steps.

I love the above idea to use standardized, easily replaced cabling such as HDMI. But I'd choose a sealed connector (waterproof) instead, if possible. If HDMI, at least provide a feature like a rubber boot to deflect water.

I have mixed feeling on touchscreen. I like being able to use the buttons they way they are now for PAS. Changing advanced settings is a different story...touchscreen would be easier for that. I used to have to work outside with laptops and color lcd screens were always a problem. We would prefer our ancient laptops with black/white lcd's. The brighter the sun the better you could see them. Backlight when it was dark.
The DPC10 works good in the sun, though it does get hot spots in the display.

            Limiting current is very helpful!

No need for color, but an illuminated screen is critical for nighttime driving.

Personally, I would like a clock, but that is a strange request.

I use Ah consumed, average Wh, max current, min voltage, miles travelled, total number of charge cycles for the battery, and total miles since display was installed.

Would be great to have an advanced setting to adjust current readout so it accurately displays amps being used by Luna Ludicrous Controller.

Integrated with light or throttle?----I don't understand this but it would be nice if an electric signal could be ported to the outside to turn head and tail lights on and off maybe linked to the night mode.

                No on the touch screen

                Open source might be cool

I really like a large Watt meter number/font. About the same size as Speedo number like the 750C. Of course, Ah/Wh. If per mile data can be included even better.

Touchscreen isn't high on my list and I would like to keep handlebar switches. Or, at least the option?

% meter which can be calibrated for 48/52V? But as long as the volt meter works accurately, I really don't care about "battery fuel gauges" which never seem to work better than a simple volt reading.

I kinda liked the daytime "book reader" white background on DPC-14 and the black background for night.

                  I also prefer horizontal/landscape orientation.

An option for rotate screen to do either horizontal or vertical? Need to design twice as many layouts, so a pain. I'd also prefer horizontal if only one or the other. I like that it aligns visually with the bars better, and seems less obtrusive, and less likely to get smashed, when mounted horizontal.

PIN lock that really works to disable everything, which can be used to 'lock' the bike or not at shutdown. For example, hold a button during shutdown to lock it.

Would cadence be possible? That would probably require a magnet and sensor on the crank arm.

The pin lock raises an interesting question, if this were implemented, should there be a reset procedure to reset the pin?

Previous displays did not have this so if you forgot your password you needed a new display.

...But if a thief can just Google the pin reset procedure it is less useful as a theft deterrent.

Great question. I would absolutely provide a reset procedure, and don't make it a big secret, either. That's not a feature which calls for for 'high security' in my opinion. The PIN is so when you don't lock the bike, say in your own yard or at a friends house, nobody can turn it on. Not really a theft prevention method. For that, you lock it. I'm more worried about keeping drunk friends and kids off it with a PIN. Or stopping the curious from turning it on and playing while it's locked and I'm away.

If the PIN is made robust, a savvy miscreant has at least a couple of alternate methods to turn it on and ride it away under power, anyway. I won't say here, why make it easier for them...

If a slightly more robust PIN reset procedure is desired, a timer could be incorporated to force, say, a 1 hour delay in the process. OK to resurrect the coveted Luna eBike you just picked up at an estate sale in the future sometime, but no good for joy riding.

GPS would make it a must have in my opinion. The ability to run 6 volt dc (3 watts) Dynamo head and tail lamps would really be nice as the best lighting made for bikes are dynamo powered. Don't care about color display but prefer black case so display doesn't stick out like a sore thumb and invite trouble makers. No touchscreen- either PAS buttons on side/bottom of display case or separate handlebar control like current models. A thumb throttle remote that doesn't crowd shifters/brake levers would be a huge plus. Build it and I definitely will buy it
