    Spoke calculation

    So I'm using 2 different spoke length calculators, http://www.ebikes.ca/tools/spoke-calc.html and the Sheldon Brown spocalc http://sheldonbrown.com/rinard/spocalc.htm and they are giving me close, but different numbers. I've got the MXUS XF07 hub motor, and took my measurements off the presets on http://www.ebikes.ca/tools/spoke-calc.html. Doing 1 cross, elbow in I get 202.2mm and elbow out I get 203.2mm from that one. Using spocalc I get 203.7mm (I'm guessing elbow out?).

    So, they are close, but are they close enough to say 203mm is good? Or 204mm? This is a first wheel build (prebuilt all the other times), so what would you guys suggest? I'm going to get the Sapim Strong 13ga elbow 14ga spokes. And does nipple length matter so much? 12mm? 14mm?

    If you have the double wall rim them 203mm. easier enough to grind the spoke back with a dremel.

      Yea, that's what I'm going with, got advice elsewhere as well. And 14mm nipples, since they pointed out it can allow for even more thread contact and a bit more flexibility. I have no experience wheel building, and I found a local guy who will do it up, true it, and make sure the spoke tensions are right. I just wanted to make sure I had good spokes for this.

        I just built a wheel. I used Sheldon Brown's calculator and it came out spot on. I did not measure anything but used Sturmey Archer's specifications and a measurement from the rim manufacturer. The way I understand the nipple question is the 14 mm nipple will make the total length of the spoke assembly 2mm longer. 12 mm nipples are standard.

          Since you have measurements from two calculators, it's a good idea to take the average of the values you obtained. In your case, the average of 203.2mm and 203.7mm is approximately 203.45mm. Rounding it off, you can choose 203mm or 204mm spokes. It's best to err on the side of caution and go with the longer spoke length (204mm) to ensure that you have enough thread engagement with the nipple. pge outage map
