New to this forum - Programming a Bafang 1000W mid drive - Throttle programming

HI everyone. So I just finished a build putting a 1000w bafang mid drive kit on my Giant Trance mountain bike. I am looking for a few suggestions on the programming.
Just some quick background. This is on a full suspension mountain bike. I will be riding road, offroad trails, single track and paved trails. I am by no means an extreme rider.

    1. Level 1 assist is a little to aggressive, Seems a little fast. This seems pretty straight forward, just keep dropping the current limit and speed limit until I find a pace I like. ANy suggestions on a good setting would be appreciated. They started at Current limit 50, Speed limit 44

    2. I feel like in all the assist levels when the motor kicks in it is a pretty aggressive. I feel like I can feel the back of the bike torqueing to the right. I would like to smooth this out but everything I read about changing the Start current or slow start mode settings is you have to be careful with these 2. Mine is currently set at Start Assist - 50%, slow start mode 8. Any suggesting on some safe but softer setting here?

    3. What are your thoughts on the throttle. Currently at level 0 I have no throttle. And the "Designated Assist Level' is set at 'By Displays Command" It would make a lot of sense to me to have full throttle all the time. For sure if I am in assist level 0. Any down sides to this? What is the best way to set this up?

    Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried changing your PAS steps from the default 5 to 9. You can do that on most of the displays on the advanced screens usually where the wheel size is also set. Many of us didn't really like the way the systems worked and were thinking of digging into the deeper programming but then found that with the 9 steps it was fine. It doesn't change the min or max just gives you finer steps.

Nothing wrong with getting into the programming but I would try riding more on the default settings just to get a feel for it and what you want to change.

I will definitely give that a try, but not sure that will solve what I am experiencing. As I understand it, when you set the PAS to 5 instead of 9 isn't the programming just using what you have programmed in for 1,3,5,7,9?
So Level 2 on PAS set to 5 is the same as Level 3 with the PAS set to 9

    Hello!

I have the same question as above...

Since the programming screen will show all 9 levels...if you are trying to tone down level 1 to 5 ( 5 Assist) how does that relate to the 9 that are shown?
    Is programming 1 3 5 7 9 levels translate to a 5 level setup?
or...if you decide on just 3 levels...1 5 9 for the level power changes?

    Thanks!

Greg - you are exactly right. If you set up as 5 level it is 1,3,5,7,9. I have tried both 5 and 9 and like the 5 level setup.

Going thru the programming really made a world of difference on how my bike performs. I am much happier now being able to dial in the amount of assist and how hard it comes on.

        Thank you!!

I figured as much but I just wanted to verify. Time to start tweaking the power levels!

IMO 50% is crazy high current (power) for assist 1... e.g. mine is set to 6%

Another thing I've found is that most "factory" settings go with a linear ramp up on current (power) - i.e. each step is roughly the same amount... to me a geometric ramp is much more sensible - i.e. each step multiplies by the same amount instead of adding.

          My current (power) settings:

Click image for larger version Name:	PASlevels.png Views:	0 Size:	13.1 KB ID:	123298

Each step is roughly 142% of the last step and every two steps roughly double the power

Most of my riding is in levels 2-4. If headwinds or hills maybe 5. I use 6-8 when I'm going really fast on a larger battery. I almost never use 9 but it's there and I use 1 when starting off and if riding with folks on non-electric (I also use 0 when with folks without assist) or just in mellow mode/mood - range is unreal if left in PAS 1 and even 2 is pretty amazing

I set the speed to 100% across the board

For the throttle I set the designated assist level to 9 (100% power and speed) and the mode to "current" ("speed" mode really sucks IMO) but I set the start current to 1% which gives exceptionally gentle startup, even in my lowest gears which are very low, and the throttle response is very smooth and predictable across the entire range

I have a spreadsheet calculator that will compute the levels based on a geometric progression - the table is from that... green are the entries and yellow the output for the programming tool... I've shared it plenty and just ask if you'd like it...

I have found the guides invaluable. I have programmed my BBSHD to perfection by reading through the guides carefully, trying to understand the details and doing a bit of experimenting. Here are the guides:

One way that the BBS02 middrive unit shines over other competition like the Bosch is the ability to program the controller yourself. Although the process of programming the controller will void any…

It’s been a while since I wrote the posts about my electric bicycle conversion project. The bicycle runs fine so far and I finally finished rewriting the software that configures its controll…

I do not know if you have already dealt with it, but according to me, there is always time to analyze and possibly change the program - someone gave it to us so that we could update it and adapt it to your preferences or requirements.
It is important to understand what a given value brings - how the engine reacts to changes in the software - what it is all about, what changes of particular parameters give us.
              - Give up the Speed limit and give 100% everywhere - as AZguy writes, you will not be annoyed by the cessation of support when exceeding the set speed.
              - Set the start current so that the engine does not give the impression that it jerks at the start - as if I would give below 10%
              - Stop Delay - give for a minimum of 5 ms to be able to change gear, brake, etc. without any sensors (shift and brake sensors - unnecessary) immediately after stopping shooting.
              - As for the throttle - be careful with End Voltage, it is better to set a little lower - because you will be surprised by a sudden voltage drop and the engine will turn off - it's better to set 1-2 V lower. If you have a voltmeter set on the display, you already know when you have to give up driving yourself for the sake of the battery. 41V for bat. 48 or 44V for bat 52.
              - Assist Level - this is the level of the belt on which you want the throttle to run - I use it to save myself in the sand, sometimes for a quick start under the lights, or for moving at all - from a place under load. - I think levels 6-7-8 are acceptable.
              - Curren start for me has a value of 1% - there are no surprises then that the bike will break out like a steed.
Generally, the thumb throttle is a dangerous device - you have to be careful when standing at the traffic lights among other people so that someone (or yourself) does not press it accidentally - because it may be a tragedy, it is best to place it so that it requires a bit more work than the thumb - so set it so that the start was from vertical to the top, i.e. positioned at 6 clock. I don't know if it made it clear - but I'm trying to make it so that everyone can understand it. Just an accidental activation of the throttle will pull you straight under oncoming cars.
And back to the point - the other settings are ok. It is important that you feel what you are changing and why and what effect it should bring ..

                With certain displays like my p850c and whatever Luna cycles version is, 5 levels of assist = 2 of 9, 4 of 9, 6 of 9, 8 of 9, and 9 of 9. They do not use 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9.
