I rode a buddies electric bike late last year and since then contemplated buying or building one myself. I did quite a bit of reading on electric bikes since then and about a month ago decide to get one for commuting as I finally got fed up with traffic, it takes me 12 min to go 10 miles in the morning but 30-40 to get home. I been following Karmic bikes and was highly interested in the Koben S but as I can take the street or trails part of the way I wanted something that I could ride on the street or dirt. So I started looking at 29er's with hydraulic brakes but I just happened to find this article https://www.empoweredcycles.com/blog...d-drive-motors and thought that would be perfect bike. Instead of a 29, it's a 27.5 with a 3" wide tire and it's awesome. Sorry for not having pics documenting from start but was just to eager to get started. Here's the final product.

Had the crank arms and bottom bracket removed at a bike shop and a pressfit FSA BB30 adapter. Make sure you get the pressfit one, I didn't pay enough attention to the linked article above and purchased the non pressfit adapter, had to re-order and wait a few days for the correct one. Once installed I put in the motor. To get the correct clearance I had to shim the motor with a thin and thick spacer included with the luna kit (there kits come with many needed parts to adapt to different bb sizes) Took a few times to get the correct sizing. With the lock ring I had to use a thick and two thin spacers.

The luna tool makes installing the next two lock rings a breeze, it I was building these everyday I'd get the torque wrench adapters but no need here. Installed the battery mount, this frame has the 3 holes, and fit is perfect.

Used black silicone to mount the hydraulic brake sensors (still need to clean it up with a razor blade). Wasn't took happy with the circle magnet rings, dropped both on the floor and they both broke. However I only mounted one using epoxy. On the other I drilled into the brake handle and epoxied in a neodymium magnet that I had. I'll remove the disk later and do the same to the other lever. Much happier with how it mounts in.

Installed the thumb throttle on the right side, left side the assist/power, and installed the display. Used a quite a bit of zip ties to clean things up.
Next is removing quite a bit of wire from the motor and battery and splicing in x90 connectors.

did buy a bunch of lights to wire into the main power harness, but after completing the wiring for the two front lights and adapters to the main harness I was unhappy with the amount of wiring on the bike. No longer did it look clean. I then decided since wireless rechargeable lights are so good and affordable I'd just go that way.
I have to say after a week of riding this bike it's fantastic. It's comfortable using on both street and trail. I can go 20 miles roundtrip on 80% charge to work, mainly uphill on the way there and down on the way back, without worries and not having to recharge. This setup tops out at 33 on the flats with the throttle. Mainly using assist at 6-7 and going at 26-28. Wish the dpc14 was calibrated for 52 watts
Still need to take care off
Remove excess battery and harness wiring. Add x90 connectors
Install gear shift sensor
