    Downhill MTB for the street

This Rocky Mountain RM7 DH bike has been with me for quite a few years and has undergone many gas powered transformations.
Its been front drive, rear drive, mid drive & even dual engine drive. This is the 1st time its been electric & I gotta say I really like it.
I dropped the front end by sliding the fork tubes up into their mounts, flipped the handlebars, flipped the stem, dropped the seat & installed some Kenda slicks. It now has amazing street bike handling with 7" of suspension front & rear.
I recently installed a Bafang BBSHD mid-drive kit onto my KMX Venom trike and was blown away by the performance and silence of this drive. I went and bought another kit from Luna Cycles to convert 'The Beast' from gas to electric. 'The Beast' was driven by a Tanaka 47R mounted on top of the top tube via some angle aluminum & a DIY shift kit.
In its current form, with the 42T Luna Eclipse chainring it'll do 35 mph and the battery lasts throughout my normal spirited neighborhood romps usually 30-40 miles (I may install a 52T just to see what kind of speed it can pull).
It charges back up quickly, or slowly depending on the amp setting I choose on my Luna smart charger (1-5 amp settings). I also chose to use the 80% instead of 100% charge setting to hopefully get more cycles out of the $500 battery pack (52V Panasonic GA cells).
I think I'm sold on electrics, and can imagine building an even more powerful 72V setup in the future.

          • Nice build! How does the weight balance feels (especially in curves) with the battery at this location?

            Thanks guys!!!
            Regarding the handling?
It handles really great, kinda like a superlight streetbike motorcycle. I like the battery there cause I can squeeze it between my legs for support when I'm carving turns & gettin it. Kinda looks like a motorcycle gas tank?
For me, a DH mountain bike set up for the street makes the ultimate sport e-Bike, I could raise the seat if I wanted to pedal but then the handling goes out the window. I wouldn't trade my KMX Venom e-trike cause its a blast to ride which bring me to the conclusion that just one e-bike aint enough!
I still have an Optima Baron Lowracer & a homebuilt Tall bike aptly named '2-High' that could sure use another BBSHD kit...
            Cheers,
            Lowracer

As a fellow motorcyclist (gas) I like your point about squeezing the battery like it was your tank for carving turns. Love it. I'm very new to e-bikes and have "scraped the pegs" -- the pedals-- several times going into turns motorcycle like, on my Stromer. The battery looks cumbersome but that point makes it all sensible. And the inverted bars give it a cafe racer like stance, like dropped clip ons on an old school cafe racer "doing the ton." Dig it. Thanks for sharing.

Where do you ride it? Get any shit from cops?

                MM,
I ride it all over the place and haven't been stopped by the police yet. Out of habit from yesteryear, I'll usually spin the cranks a few times when I'm within eyeshot of the Po-Po.
I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of a BBS02 kit with a spare battery cradle that i recently ordered from Luna
I'm going to install it on an Optima Baron lowracer and will start a new thread once road ready.
                Peace,

Looks Great! I am all for EDH Bikes! have a 3000w Rocky Mountain Flatline myself!

just one question, how is cornering with the battery on the top tube?

                      Thanks guys.
Regarding handling, please read post #6.
I just received a new BBS02 kit that I'm planning on putting on my Optima Baron Lowracer.
This should be an interesting e-bike & I'll post a new thread.
I have 2 BBSHD bikes and haven't even tried out a BBS02 so I went and ordered it for 3 reasons.
                      -Its cheaper
                      -its lighter
-I don't want to travel @ 'Ludicrous Speed' on the streets with a Lowracer (afraid I might break the frame or something).
I'll probably install it this weekend & get some pics of it for the forum.
                      Peace,

                          GreenWerks,

The build is done & its awesome, but I find myself riding the BBSHD KMX Venom trike the most of my 3 e-bikes. i just finished a build on an Optima Baron Lowracer with BBS02 & 52V GA sharkpack that I still need to take some pics of.
I may add a BBSHD to either my Tallbike or 2nd KMX trike both now powered by gas.
                          Cheers,
