Pictures from Steel Brazing class at UBI

I am uploading some of the more interesting photos. Sorry that I don't have time to crop the photos, put them in chronological order or provide greater detail. The class was extremely challenging and frustrating, but rewarding. I highly recommend this class.

This is a file card. It is used to sharpen files:

We made a 1:1 scale drawing of our frame. Boy, did we refer to the drawing a lot! The better the drawing (as in true circles and angles and thin, straight lines), the better the miter.

This picture shows the seat tube, chain stays, seat stays, BB, dropouts and head tube that I chose from UBI's large selection of butted tubing:

Using plywood to oblongate the top tube where it meets the seat tube because the top tube had a larger diameter than the seat tube. Then we mitered the oblongated top tube.

The fit between a mitered 1 1/2" down tube and a 48mm head tube. This was a brazing class so we fillet brazed with brass filler:

A picture of a very large (and heavy) front triangle. I used the longest, thickest tubing that they had. The top tube will be pushing into my crotch when I am standing over it, but I wanted the maximum amount of real estate inside the triangle (for huge Bluetooth speakers!). Note the Anvil Bikes frame fixture; these are sweet.

Laying completed parts on the drawing to make sure that I am following the drawing:

Brazing 4130 steel using brass filler rod with an oxyacetylene setup (regulator settings at 10 psi oxygen, 4.5 psi acetylene). The face shield is a Shade 5.

In the first photo, you can perceive the shrinkage of the (cross section of the) BB due to all of the heat. This is later rectified by chasing the BB threads and facing the BB shell.

Huge Vernier calipers! I have needed these so many times (e.g. to measure the diameter of a hub motor). I would like to buy the digital version, if it exists.

Marking the seat stays so that they are set to the same height. One can also see the Anvil Bikes 192mm dummy axle.

Using a brass rod as a fixture to keep bolt bosses in place for brazing:

Flux on a tube and braze-on for silver soldering. I call this steel braze-on a saddle.
