Stock bearings bad, beefy tapperd bearings good.

When I bought my bike brand new the fork bearings was first to fail, would pop when I turn sharply and later when I had it on a stand I could wiggle the forks back and forth. That's when I replaced them and they seem to be the way to go.

Spark, IIRC, your bike is older and prolly had the caged bearing style system. Were you able to source the newer tapered bearings as well as the aluminum cups they assemble with?

Yes my bike had the dinky cage bearings that wore out quick. I order the tapered bearings from Luna back when they were in stock and it came with everything to replace the old ones.

Hades Omega has a you tube video installing the tapperd bearings from Luna and he shows you everything you get in the package. Hope that helps you.

Sorry J D. I know that info was useless and didn't help you at all.

You should consider between the threaded and threadless headsets, threadless headsets are considered better by pro-MTB riders. However, for those looking for better handling adjustments and classic-looking appeal bikes, you should choose threaded headsets.
