Chain ring and derailer alignment ?

I am using a 9 speed Sram cassette. I have seen a number of
BSHD set up videos but nothing that I have seen so far addresses the issue of a preferred alignment of the chain ring and cassette. I'm asking should the chain align perfectly straight with the center of the cassette, gear four or five for example. Or would it be advantageous to cheat toward a sprocket toward the part of the cassette that will endure the most abuse such as off road riding and the larger diameter sprockets. Thanks

I would rearrange your gear cluster so your 3-4 most used gears are in good alignment with the front sprocket. Or get an IGH.

I guess this is an optimization question without a clear answer: do the chain and gears that are most used gently wear off faster or slower than the gears that are used less often but harder and at less good alignment?
