Hard to diagnose issue with BBSHD

Hi all - I have a tricky issue that I could use some help diagnosing. A few weeks ago, my bbshd (1000w) motor started exhibiting some strange behavior. In the middle of my ride, the motor started to “shudder” — rapidly cutting in and out as I tried to peddle out of a dead stop. At the same time, the display indicated that the battery was empty (even though I had nearly a full charge). Then the display went dead and the motor, too. I could power it back up, but then the same process repeated.

I tried again a couple days later, and it seemed to preform ok while I had it on low power mode (2-3 power assist), but when I started riding normally at 7-9 power assist, the same shudder/battery flash/shutdown occurred.

My first step was to test the battery which seemed to be in good shape. The connection pins look fine as well. I then took off the controller and peeked inside the motor (coils), both of which seemed to be fine. I’ve ordered a replacement controller, hoping that might solve the problem, but I’m not 100% sure that’s the right solution.

Have any of y’all experienced this? Any ideas?

PS - I have 4k miles on the bike over the past 3 years. I also lug my 2 kids on the back (it’s a cargo bike), who are now quite big. This may be why the motor is failing on me now!

How did you test the battery?

I would definitely check the battery first before you order replacement parts.

Sounds like a BMS issue. When testing use the brake to apply resistance. What brand battery pack.
