On mine it does not alternate (if I uderstand what you mean by "alternate"), it stays on all the time, except briefly off when the magnet passes by.

The red led alternates every time it detects the magnet. Trigger on, trigger off, trigger on etc

The red light is on except it is switched off when magnet is there. I have a new bbshd just mounted, I had the idea light should turn on when magnet is close, not off? Seems odd. Well, nice little red light down there but should it be like that?

Look for a blinking red light.

neither. magnet-to-sensor gap is what I provided. And it doesn't matter how far the magnet is from axle (axel) because a revolution is still a revolution.

2-5mm seems to be what many installers use. I've heard it may work up to 10mm but I like it a little closer than that...

how long should the speed sensor be placed from the axel?
is the distance even important?
