Are there any recommended direct drive kits? Is Schuck an OK kit ?

I'm looking at direct drive rear hub kits for my 29" mountain bike.

But I have no idea who to trust or where to get a reliable kit.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

If I was looking for a rear direct drive hub motor I think I would be looking here. I'm not looking for one and have not really researched it but these guys seem to have a good reputation in general and seem to be really into hub motors.

      I took a look.

Unfortunately, all of their direct drive kits are the same price as a mid drive kit from Bafang.

Thanks. Finally someone who tried their kits.

I have one on the way. First eBike for me.
I'm pretty good with electronics and electrical repairs and batteries so I figured I have a good shot at making it work.

Unlike a lot of folks here, this kit will have a fairly easy life. No off roading, no pushing it hard, 99% flat terrain, occasional use only.. If it lasts a year or two I'm good.

I just finished installing a Schuck kit on m 29" Mountain Bike.
Overall I am pretty impressed. Everything went well once I added a hub spacer. All the parts fit well otherwise.
I've turned it on to see the display and ran the back wheel and everything works as expected but I haven't ridden it yet due to trying to engineer a fitting for my rather large long distance battery. The battery is approximately 11" x 5.5" x 3.75". BtrPower (ebay). 20Ah (tested @ 16.5amps to 18Ah)

It won't get hard abuse and will be a road bike only so I'm hoping it will last at least a few years. I paid $340 for the kit and $300 for the battery.
The throttle and opposite grip and brake hardware mounted easily and works well. The display is full color LCD and I really like it. Hope I can see it in full sun.

This is a 2015 Walmart Mongoose MTB. My battery is large and not yet mounted.
I have a dual torque arm kit yet to install.

                Thanks.
Some. I've put about 20 miles on it.
I have to remove a flat spot on the rim.

I would add a 200mm front brake rotor ( with bracket) and maybe some EBC metallic brake pads. There's no such thing as too much brakes.
The metallic pads like a nice clean rotor. Doing them both at once has benefits.

After a quick search on ebay and Amazon......

seems 160mm is mainstream. Hard to find 180 or 200mm kits.

                    I assume I will need a caliper assy also? Where can I find a 180 - 200mm complete kit that won't need a 2nd mortgage?

                  200mm rotor here.

The older 203mm size in Tektro is cheaper
Browse a huge range of mountain bike disc brake, Pads, Adaptors, Calipers, Bleed Kits & more. Pads in various compounds like sintered, organic, metal etc. DOT fluid & mineral oil & bleed kits. Rotors & adapters in 200, 180, 203, 220, 160. Brake lever parts, clamps, mounts. Sram Level, G2, Code, Shimano SLX, XT, XTR

You just get a longer bracket to mount the caliper you have now. There are 2 types depending on which way the holes on your fork go.

                  Tektro 203mm adapter is here.

I can't tell from the photo exactly which type of cable disc brake you have. Without that I can't help you find the pads. If the bike isn't real fast the regular pads might be OK. On a Walmart bike I'm guessing Tektro of some kind

If you decide to upgrade the pads later just sand the rotor clean first.
