"Edge" 1500W DD hub with 35mm wide stator, thin laminations, aluminum core

Starting this thread as a place to park info I am collecting for an article. I bought one of the first of these hubmotors from LA eBike (Alan Chinito Hu and Corbin Keegan).

(all stators discussed in this post are 205mm outer diameter) A year or so ago, quite a few guys had bought and tried the Leafbike 1500W. It has the thinner 0.35mm laminations, instead of the common 0.50mm. reviews widely praised its capabilities. Crystalyte had been making a popular 35mm stator motor. Works fine at rated power levels, but excessive eddy current heat at high RPM's, also axles break if you double the power and use hard regen. the Leafbike had a stronger axle, the motor phase wires came out inside the drop-outs (instead of a hollow axle). This is good for protecting the wires in a wreck, also it makes it MUCH easier to upgrade to thicker phase wires.

MXUS, Cromotor, and QS all proved there was a big benefit to having an aluminum cast stator support (instead of the common stamped steel plate). The aluminum mass that was firmly attached to the steel stator magnetic cores acted as a heat sponge. It didn't help the continuous long-term heat capability, but...it doubled the short-term amps when accelerating from a stop. After a few seconds, assuming you have attained a stable cruise speed, the amps slide back down to a much lower level, and everything has a chance to cool down.

To be clear, if you live at the base of a tall mountain, and you use full throttle all the way up the mountain, the aluminum core will DELAY the motor getting heat-soaked (using double the rated amps), but it will eventually still overheat. where the aluminum core really shines is on relatively flat land, on a street. The double amps can provide excellent acceleration in a motor that is lighter (and hopefully cheaper) than what would normally be specced.

MXUS makes an aluminum core in their 28mm wide stator, and also their famous 45mm wide stator (the 3000W rated model). QS makes one of these with a 50mm wide stator.

Both have been asked to make an aluminum core stator with a 35mm width, so a 6-speed mega-range cassette can still fit on it, with the axle shoulders fitting into common 135mm wide drop-outs. Both have declined unless some of the development costs were paid upfront, and a large minimum quantity was pre-ordered.

I don't know who LA eBike got them from, but....they had to order 100 units to get these features, and I have one. I laced it to a 19-inch MMP moped rim, and the moped tire comes out to about 24 inches OD. I am close to getting this running on 52V X 50A = 2600W

Managed to publish the info I have accumulated so far into an article

This is a direct drive (DD) hubmotor that I have been waiting for someone to produce the last two years, and now, someone finally has. This article will explain what’s good about it, and why …

Nice write up! If you've got experience with it, how does it compare to the Magic Pie?

I haven't tried the Magic Pie, but...on paper, the Edge 1500 is capable of at least twice to three times the power without overheating. Of course the Edge is also heavier (plus the MP already has a controller built in, and the Edge needs a separate controller to be purchased), so...there is always a compromise.

        Spinningmagnets Greetings
My name is Bill and I am with Green Werks
I have read you article on the edge 1500w hub motor I was very impressed
my new build I am going to use this motor and the 52v 24ah 50 amp contunious =2600w battery like you did
it will be hooked to a cyclone 40a controller
My question is how is your set up working out
and what do you think of my combination.
any info would be great Thankx.

Hello greenwerks. It works great, and I have gotten the motor hot yet, just barely warm. You will enjoy 40A, but be aware that the motor can take more. I am looking for a higher powered controller that I can recommend, because the 18-FET scooter controllers are so unnecessarily large.

I will report back when I have tried 60A, which is a good peak draw for my battery.

My goal is a system that can provide 40-MPH in an emergency, but cruises well at the street-legal 28-MPH.

40-MPH is easily done with 60V or 72V, but those batteries are larger and more expensive.

Thank you so much for the get back
Do you know anything about the new 2017 Leaf motor supposed new and improved 1500w
does it have the aluminum stator support like the edge 1500w
            Thank you again

I don't know yet, but if you already have a 1500W Leafbike 35mm hub, I would add either ATF, or ferro fluid

Greetings Spinning Magnets and thanks again for getting back
I have the Edge 1500w motor I don't know if it is the same as the Leaf bike hub
I will be running the cyclone 40a controller with a 52v 24ah battery
Do you think I will need to also run a coolant in the motor or vent the hub with this set up
to dissipate heat. This is my motor https://electricrt.myshopify.com/col...rear-hub-motor
                Thankx Bill.

At 40A, you will be fine, it will not overheat.

Does any one have any experience in installing the cyclone 40a controller on this motor
any feed back would be great.

Over the next month, I plan to try the KBS controller from Kelly, it's pretty small for a 55A controller. It's $180, so the Cyclone would be cheaper. I'll post results here. If it's really good, I'll post an article about it.

I changed things up and went with a E.R.T.
3000W Sinewave Controller Fully Programmable Using the XPD software
I will sort out the cyclone later this will be a plug and play for the Edge

                      Greetings Spinningmagnets Question
Is there any need for a cycle analyst if you have a programmable controller

The Cycle Analyst is a sophisticated device that can provide lots of useful information and features. I haven't gotten a CA running on an Edge 1500W hub yet, so I would say it's not vital. Whether it is worth it or not depends on the rider and the system it's on.
