A picture would help. I will say I was taking apart a S-A 5spd twist shifter to replace the cable and getting nowhere. 2 or 3 screws were removed with no results.. The trick was going inside the hole for the handle bar and lifting a couple of tabs and sliding it apart. YMMV

Been inside the hole and saw the tabs... but how exactly to get them to disengage all at the same time???

I have never had one of those. Try putting a wedge somewhere to apply pressure in the direction you want to go. I used a hooked tool to lift the tabs one at a time and as long as I maintained tension the tabs didn't snap back.

I have so many probing tools from a lifetime of auto mechanics that I can't recall. I used to get these sets of picks from the tool trucks that looked like mini screwdrivers. One was an awl one a hook one had a right angle tip. The one I think I used was straight with a slight bend and a very small sharper bend at the tip.



The one in the middle if I remember right.

Calfee your posts inspired me to give it another go! Stopped by and picked up this set from the dentist ... errr hardware store :-)





Poked and pried and pulled...hit the right combination, and off it popped! Without the proper tools, and the "wedge somewhere to apply pressure" I would not have gotten it. Thank you again!

Had to laugh tho, in the interest of full disclosure there was no third screw! Just a plastic molded post and insert spot. But grip still had to be removed to gain access...

So the pick the lock method works O.K. And as I do it time and again , it's getting easier. But looking for something a little more easier.

T.P. roll to the rescue! Thinner pliable plastic tubing the correct diameter for my throttle removal tool.

So I know what your thinking, how's it work? :-) Well, it's not quite fool-proof, but probably about twice as good as the pick method.

After getting a good idea of what's needed to unlock the assembly...decided to try version 2.0.


Took and modified a paint can opener as required...Original on the left, modified on the right.








Mostly fool proof and easier to use. ;-)
