Depending where you get it from, the risk factor is pretty high. House fires are a real thing. I wouldn't recommend it honestly unless you're sure you're buying from a reputable vendor. There are a few of them but you'll have to do some research.
Usually if the price is too good to be true, it's because it is. So just keep that in mind. -

I wouldn't even entertain the idea of buying a battery from either eBay, Alibaba or China, primarily because I wouldn't have any faith in the cells and BMS being able to deliver a good amount of both continuous and burst current.
I would expect a cheap BMS and I would be surprised if the cells were not counterfeit.

Where do you think Luna gets their packs from? You don't really think they make all their packs do you? Sure, they make some of them, but the bulk of them come from China. Check out Unit Pack Power. I've been buying and installing these packs for a year now and have had zero problems.Comment

I buy packs from Unit Pack Power and they have no 'foreign statement of origin labels' on them. I heard from a known good source that Luna gets their shark packs from the same place I do, UPP. Very little is "made in the USA", labor is too expensive. Everything is "Made in China". Luna has been built on importing Chinese made goods. How about it paxtana, where does Luna get their packs? -
Well it's not like we will reveal our OEM, distributors and factories we deal with to you sorry. But yeah of course we don't make all of our packs it's not a secret. The shark packs are a good example, we can't make that many packs...
But I can assure you this: our goal is to make as much as possible in the USA and keep the price as low as possible and that now we have new state of the art machinery for making batteries, we can make them faster and better... so we will do our best to make everything in house.

I almost fell into a ebay scam, I was looking for 48v at a min of 20 amp/hr. I found a listing for 48 at 32 amp/hr and figured i was good to go, Except when you read the fine print, their pack was using 18650 as expected but the configuration was way off. Their product was 13s3p, when you do the math 13s doesn't give you 48 volts and 3p doesn't give to 32 amp/hr, not even close. I reported the scam to ebay but nothing really happened. SO, if you're gonna risk buying chinese junk from over seas good luck.Comment

I tried the inexpensive batteries with my RC trucks and cars.....why take the risk of a fire and poor performance overall.

Has anyone heard of the factory name WILTSON. Im trying to source LiFePo4 batteries for my 6kw Cyclone with 80a bluetooth controller. They have 26650 3.2v 3800mah LiFePo4 cells for $2.32 ea. I can get 100 of them shipped express for $264 to use to make a pack for my motor. I'm already over budget for my bike and dont want to get a battery so small it wil make the power my motor has useless, i also dont want to throw money away on crap. i figure maiking my own pack is the best way to get an affordable battery that can deliver what i want. I'm njot sure how many cells I would need, how to configure them, or which bms i would need, or if this company or cells are legit. Thak you for any help you can give.

FWIW, building your own battery isn't likely going to save you much money (if any) even if you place a super low value on your time. By the time you've obtained the proper tools and materials, especially in the low volumes it takes to build just one, you'll likely be better off just buying one - not to mention counting on everything going well and if it's your first time that's likely sort of on the optimistic side of things.Originally posted by Beast Bikes View Post

There are literally millions of LiFePo4 Chinese cells in USA homes for solar power at this point.
Not to mention hundreds of million in million of applications.
It's really difficult to say "No way I'd use cheap Chinese batteries", when nearly all of the batteries you have came from China one way or the other, at the end of the day.
Fires from batteries are statistically rare. very rare.....and more often than not, user error.
That said....Buy American whenever you can !!Comment

I posted this on another thread with some background checking and direct contact with them, so I won't repeat all that. Earlier this year when there was nothing available in the size and specs that I wanted for a relatively powerful 52V, 17.5AH battery with the cells I wanted for my MTB backpack application. I went with Bicycle Motor Works out of Pennsylvania. I was familiar with them from their gas engine bike conversions, and the owner has gotten into assembling ebike battery packs for awhile now. Been using this pack for some time now, and it's provided flawless operation. Ebike batteries are a huge chunk of the overall price/value of the bike, but there are only a few really well known and trusted sources for these batteries. I'm hoping that the long term service of the BMW battery holds true.Comment
