Luna X1 advanced troubleshooting : battery and power wiring

Just curious with all the people posting about putting bigger front sprockets on their X-1's, is this because you are riding them on the road? I don't ride my X-1 anywhere but on single track trails, I have had it topped out in 12th in the trails, you wouldn't want to be going much faster than 24 or 25, that is really flying in the woods.

I ride all off road but there are still logging forest roads and gravel roads as part of my rides
You run out of gears really fast with the 32 tooth chain ring

I have a 40 tooth chain ring on my X1 and thet feels just right
Even on super steep off road climbs, the 40T plus the 50 tooth cog is not a problem

I have the 10.2; I clamp the X1 on the top tube just forward of the triangle housing the suspension pivot. I also attach my dog leashes on the outer tube of the dropper post. My dogs have been pulling my fat @$$ around on a 60 lb fat bike for a couple years now and are crazy strong.

I'm loving my X-1, but it has a terrible screeching noise from the rear brakes but only when I'm not braking. It also happens when I lean the bike to one side. If I apply just slight pressure to the brake handle, the screeching stops. I'm guessing it has something to do with the spring not holding the pads away from the rotor, but I'm not an experienced bike mechanic. Any suggestions on how I could fix this?

One of your brake pads is rubbing. You'll need to re-center the caliper.

1) Loosen the caliper bolts until you can move the caliper around by hand.
2) Squeeze and depress the rear brake lever 3-4 times.
3) Squeeze the rear brake lever and hold it firmly.
4) Tighten the caliper bolts.

After doing this, rotate the rear wheel and see if it still rubs. If it does, repeat the steps above. The caliper should automatically center, but should & will are different things :) Sometimes I have to loosen the caliper bolts just a bit, then tap the caliper mounting tabs on the side with the plastic handle of a screwdriver to nudge it in the right direction. You can tell which side is rubbing by looking down through the top of the caliper. You should see light on both sides of the brake rotor. If not, you'll get rubbing.

The screeching noise is completely normal, btw. Once your brakes are worn in a little, they'll quiet down. The screeching is the sound of the friction material trying to grip the rotor. Kind of like rubbing your finger around the top of a wine glass.

So does it not fit a 35mm bar?

I installed mine yesterday and it fits snug on the standard handlebars that ships with the Luna. It does include a few rubber inserts for smaller bars, but I do not think it will fit on 35mm bars. BTW the little nut that needs to be inserted into the grip can be a real pain in the butt.

I feel I'm missing something... I've seen a few posts that mention 9 speeds. I only have 5 speeds I can change from in the display. Is there a setting somewhere to unlock the remaining 4...?

Got my 860C meter last night
The install was easy
A couple small pieces of electrical tape to keep the nuts in place.
Then a thin pointy object to align the nuts so the screws will be centered on the nut.

It was getting dark last night and I had to hand hold the camera and not use flash to show how nice this meter is
I removed the throttle on my X1 because I never use it.
It's a nice clean setup on my X1
Love the extra info like battery voltage.

Luna X1 battery mileage info

My X1 is non Ludi. Just the normal power on my X1
The throttle has been removed because I never use it.
Motor is set to 9 levels of assist.
Assist 1, 2 and 3 is about all I use .
I normally use the lowest assist that I can to get a workout.
I have a 40 tooth chain ring on my X1

This past Sunday I did a ride that was 35 miles and 3500 feet of climbing.
All off road riding with some forest roads and trails.
I actually used more battery than I could have but it started thundering and getting dark so I kicked it up to assist level 3 for the last 8 miles.
Here's a shot of the meter after the ride.
Note that it was about 15 minutes before I took this image.
The battery will recover a bit and show a higher % as it sits with no load.
I think the battery showed about 35% when I got off the bike.
The battery % also is less when you are riding the bike and it is under a load.
I probably could have gotten about 40 miles if the last part of the ride was flattish and I could use assist level 1

OK, I got my new 860C last night and mounted it as quick as I could. As others have noted, the little captive square nuts are tough to use. I ended up dropping one of mine in the grass and it is seemingly lost forever so I had to make do with just one side being tightened. They really should include a spare in the package since they are so easy to drop!

In playing with the meter on the ride I noticed how really easy it was to read! Such a big improvement over the stock meter. Was also really nice to have a clock handy on it as well!

When setting it up however, I had issues with a couple things. I could not access the menu to change the wheel size, the menu to hide or show the motor temp (although the motor temp is displayed in one of the info screens), and I could not change the battery voltage either. The wheel size seems to be stuck on 27.5" which is a good thing, and the battery voltage seems to be stuck on 52V. Strangely the battery percentage seemed to indicate normally. I would have expected it to be showing low with a fully charged battery since the X-1 is a 48V system.

Also noticed a "ECO" and "sport" setting, what do these items do???

I did have a very scary thing happen in the first couple miles. I got to a section of the trail where speeds were over 20mph and I felt the bike continue to accelerate as if I was holding the throttle all the way in! I stopped pedaling and the bike continued to pull! I was grabbing both brakes to slow down and then it cut it out. It did it again a few seconds later. It did not repeat again the rest of the ride. I am just glad it didn't happen in the tight trees! I am not sure if this has anything to do with the display, but seeing how the throttle is plugged into it I could see it being related.

No more power overall, just smaller gaps between each level, I run mine in the 9 step setting, typically around 6 or 7, but it uses battery fast on those settings

Maybe that will solve the problem I have with a real lack of adjustability where I typically run mine on flat ground. Level 2 feels like nothing, and level 3 is usually too much. 3 is fine for hilly terrain. But I really want something in between for flat areas.

Did you go into the meter settings and look?
It's pretty easy to find

+ and - button for a few seconds will enter setup
Then go to setting
Then Assist Mode
Set it to 9

But that 860C meter was for the BBSHD type motors

Over a 35 mile ride, the mileage will be about about 1.5 miles off
The ride mileage was really about 33.5 miles

I created a support ticket at Luna this morning asking about updating the firmware through the USB port
I'll post back when I know more
