Luna Eclipse Folding Ebike

Hello everyone,

Hope all is well! Just wanted to throw out there incase anyone was interested in upgrading or modifying their Luna Eclipse, that I just completed upgrading mine, and all went well. Here is what I did.
installed a 52V 2000W rear hub motor which included a 40 amp controller w/SW900 display. I also installed a 52V 20 AH down tube battery with 21700 Panasonic cells, which I installed 3 rivet nut screws that allowed me to mount the battery bracket, and its solid. The 40 amp controller slides right into where the stock battery went with all the cable slack. All cables routed the same as stock w/the same amount of zip ties where needed. The frame folds back together perfect with no issues. Everything was plug and play for the most part, with the transitioning from the belt setup to a single speed chain system being the most work, as far as researching . This set up is definitely MUCH faster than stock, which I have yet to max it out, I let off at about 39/40 mph since I got nervous haha, but it was still pulling me. I installed a torque arm as well since this setup for sure requires one, and slapped on some knobby tires w/slime. Here are a few pictures.

For cable brakes Avid BBB7 with EBC metallic pads work well. Rotors can be had up to 220-223mm.
TRP makes some hydraulics for Ebikes. They had to upgrade their DH brakes with new fluid, hoses, and thicker rotors. Hydros for that speed will be around $200 each.

I can't attest as to how they function, but just received a very nice looking 4 piston set I'm going to install on my buddys xp 3.0. They're on amazon for $138. and arrive in 2 days. Everything included, 180mm rotors, mounting adaptors and bolts, and the 1/2 finger alum levers look great.

Zoom H876E, available in red or black, under - CooMengZoom. about half the price of the Magura's I bought for my Eclipse.

Hey Haven 76, After thinking about it, I would probably say get at least the Magura mt5 brakes. One piece cast calipers is what you want/need for 40 mph plus stopping. With my stock Eclipse brakes I was lucky to "run out of hill cause I done run outta brakes" on my second newbie ride. Did not let it happen again!
A good hill is the only way my Eclipse can see the speed you can run at.
Not sure how I'd feel about a buick pulling out in front of my bicycle at 40 plus no matter what kinda brakes I was running.

wonder if they make quick release holsters that use standard water bottle cage mounts? the cure probably ain't better brakes, but thinnin out the terrible drivers!

Apologies for the very late response, unfortunately my job (military) takes me away for some time it seems most of the time haha. Thank you for the information and pictures of your brake system. What you have recommended it also what I have been leaning towards from my research, so spot on with those! I will be looking to order a new brake system here soon. Its been very cold with bad weather here in Cheyenne, so I have plenty of time haha. Thank you again and yes, not looking forward to any day that Buick comes out of no where!

Hello,

New customer here. Enjoying the bike so far apart from 2 things.

1. Is there any simple way to speed unlock or unlock category 3 or access some more power? I'm already on pedal assist 5. I guess I was expecting a setting in the display like other bikes have but can't see anything.

2. There is an annoying sound coming from the front end when hitting bumps or going down curbs etc. Like a rattle/something loose. Happens with or without suspension lock out. Is this normal or should I keep looking for loose stuff.

The front axle bearings on her new xp were a smidge too tight as well. Don't make them sloppy, but you shouldn't feel any friction when you hold the axle in both hands and give the wheel a spin, and the longer she spins before stopping the better it is.

I haven't checked the battery but the noise sounds just like that could be it. I don't know why I didn't think of that. :)

I'm not getting over 20mph on throttle alone so I will check the axle and brakes and go from there. It definitely feels a little slower than other bikes out of the box at least. I'm happy to know that it should be a little quicker. I'd be very happy with 25mph on throttle alone.

you're welcome Dave. keep fine tuning the bike and I'm sure you can get 25mph out of her.

Another check is how well the rear wheel is lined up and how tight the belt is. If the rear wheel/axle is a bit sideways, that can hurt top speed too. It's a little bit finicky with only an adjuster on the belt side, and it takes me a bit of putzin around to get it just right, and I go thru it every time I put the wheel back on. The belt kinda hides the eyesight alignment of the chainring and rear cog, but just keep eyeballing the whole setup including edge of the tire clearance on both sides of the frame. I'm runnin extra wide Badgers and got about 1/2" clearance on frame and belt.

It is worth any/all the trouble you go thru to get everything running smooth as can be. Sometimes good enough just ain't good enough!

Hi all! First post here.

I was finally able to mount a second battery on my Eclipse!

I added a 17.5ah 52v battery which is mounted on the underside of the frame with Rivnuts. It plugs into a battery "blender"/converter which is CRAMMED in with the controller including anderson to xt60 adapters. Supposedly 52v exceeds the "rated" voltage of the controller, but so far it works. I changed my rear tire from a heavy Shinko motorcycle tire to the original to reduce strain on the controller.

The battery just barely fits on the underside allowing access to the keyhole while also allowing you to slide in/remove the battery, I had to file down the fork a bit to get this to happen. The fork also bumps into the battery limiting the turning radius, but so far its only a factor when trying to turn the bike 180 at slow speeds or on foot. I got the expected slight boost in acceleration and top speed (which for me seems to be about 22mph PAS5) but perhaps more importantly i have a more sustained range where the bike is able to give "full" power.

Cool. Were there any hassles doing the wiring? What is this converter you are referring to?

Everything was pretty much plug and play. The specific converter im using is the DBB6040 "Double battery pack balance discharger" that I got from JohnnyNerdOut's shop which has anderson connectors 2in 1 out. There are similar balance discharge converters on amazon and an even swankier (and outrageously priced) Datex2. The in-frame battery gets converted via adapter from xt60 to anderson into the converter and then the output from the converter is converted back to xt60 and into the controller.

Good news about storing the battery. I left. One outside of the Eclipse for almost 6 months. Mean temperature was approximately 74f. The battery lost less than 3 volts. I am comfortable leaving it with no worries about depletion.

I've got a 14s8p that I left at 50.0V and a year and half later it's at 49.9V... it's bigger than I usually need so I only break it out from time to time...nice to know I can charge it and set and forget

Hey, folks! I just put in an order for this bike the other day. It will be my first foray into e-biking, and I couldn't be more excited. There are, however, a few things I would like to adjust and add on to it so I was hoping some of you might be able to point me in the right direction or answer some questions.

First, fenders. I was wondering if these fenders designed for the Aventon Sinch would also be able to be installed on the Eclipse: https://www.aventon.com/products/ave...40190515216579 If not, is there a compatible set that provides a similar amount of coverage that any of you are using?

Second, a rear rack. I would really like to have something that can be secured to the seat stay rather than the seat post, but I'm struggling to find anything in stock that could theoretically be secured with a couple of no drill sets. If I'm just out of luck in this regard, then any post-mounted recommendations are appreciated.

Lastly, and this is very low priority vanity stuff, but I'd like suggestions for any solid and reliable brown handlebar grips, seats, and tires. I just think a black and brown color scheme would be cool :)

Hey Bard, get ready for some smiling when yer Eclipse gets there- even if it's cold af and riding will be limited for a bit. I'm finding below 40 takes a lot of the joy out of riding mine, but I did get 12 mi in yesterday-central Pa.

This IS the forum to learn about your Luna Eclipse. If you read every post concerning eclipse available on this site you'll find answers to most all questions you're asking and things you haven't thought of yet. There's lots of other great ebike to suck up here as well- feed the brain

I did hours of searching for fenders before I found what I wanted for my Eclipse "build". I had/have a particular design in mind (sleek, lean, bare except for bling on the parts that are there), a greyhound, not a pack mule. Fender stays- like what's needed with the aventon's and others detract from my design, and I didn't want them on mine. To me it's ALL about the lines. me slightly dysleck sick. don't ask how much time i spent on the cable routing and wrapping.
anyway, you Could make those work (not the correct bottom mounting hole on rear fender), but IMO there's better options

Spend some time drooling over yer bike when she gets there. The frame with it's machined smooth polished welds in particular and the awesome cable tunnel. Super clean look, and for carrying or lifting, put yer right hand under the U in luna, and up the steps ya go! I couldn't even tell how awesome these features were when I ordered the bike last summer.

speedyebike.com for the fender set I bought.
They are in Italy but I got the fenders in less than 2 weeks and under $100. total. they are very strong, light, and the mount holes work well for the Eclipse. you will need some type of L bracket for the top of the rear fender. Wouldn't have to be as long as what I used- a piece of 1/4" x 1" alum by about 12", but a short L would work too. I bought a 36" piece for about 10 bucks at hdw store.
I used about 8" to make a bracket for my headlight too. Use an expanding plug for the bottom of steering tube, and you can bolt the home made bracket to that and you have a nifty clean headlight mount that follows where the bars are pointing.

What new front and rear shock did you use. Do you need the seat postmsuspension with a new rear or just like to farkle?

Look back thru some posts for info on my performance upgrades, I even posted pics of most everything I have done since it got it.

As a final cherry on top to finish my "build", the Suntour NCX suspension seatpost wasn't necessary, it's just a SERIOUS performance upgrade, and the last one I could afford to do.

If you only ride on sidewalks and or smooth level trails, the stock Eclipse is great the way they send it. I ride everything but that, and hard. My Eclipse only sees the smooth stuff when I'm walking her thru Walymart or the grocery store or bank.

If I go there my Senior Mobility Device is with me. I'm 6' and 190 lbs. and my Eclipse commands respect- kinda has the look of a black and white parked on the corner, checkin YOU out! anyway, so far nobody's objected to my bike being in their business. I don't carry a lock.

The linkage system of the post directs the forward upward thrust of the bump to the opposite motion, cancelling out the shockwaves and pressure on the: seat / rider / vertebrae / eyeballs / aluminum bike frame. It's good for the bike as much as good for the rider. less compound shockwaves to the bike frame and the human frame.

Linkage systems transfer the force of the hit, a regular spring seat or seatpost just pogo's up and down, and if the seatpost/frame has much angle to it (eclipse does), a straight spring seatpost at a rearward angle has to move forward ( opposite motion of whats required to cancel the bump) before its able to compress and resist the force of the bump.

I don't know how well it will hold up, but it's rebuildable and looks and works great while new, and I love the PLUSH ride, she floats

If you look at a rigid bike from the side going over a bump you will see that there is a triangle formed by the tire contact points and the seat.
When the bike hits a bump there is as much fore and aft motion at the seat as there is up and down. That's why the linkage seat posts are so good.

Hi all.
My speed is reading way too high and motor cuts out at very low (actual speed). Display reads 99.99mph top speed. Is this likely to be a display issue or motor issue?
I just got repaired wheel back from Luna as it needed a new freewheel. They also gave me a new LCD display as the old one wouldn't power up. Hasn't worked since. I fear I may have a lemon unless this is a simple fix.
Any help greatly appreciated. I love this bike when it works.

Thank you. I was hoping that would be something like that but it's disappointing that Luna would have sent a display to me with the wrong parameters. If I can access parameters settings for the display I'll figure it out. There only seems to be regular settings like wheel size and units.

Hi there, sorry for any confusion, the link that was just provided was not for the kind of bike you bought, the eclipse bike is not programmable at the controller level at all. However that also simplifies things a lot; in the display you probably just need to change the wheel size if it is a new display, takes like two seconds. If that doesn't do the trick just email us back on the support ticket.

Okay. Yes, I thought that was the case. Changing wheel size makes no (noticeable) difference since it's so way out of wack. I'm happy to hear it's probably the display and not the motor at least. Didn't fancy removing all that again :)

If I was building my own ebike or modifying one I would expect to need to learn how to program and configure etc. But this is a new bike from Luna so I'm just looking for guidance on how to resolve the issues under warranty as easily as possible. My guess is I'll need a new display programmed correctly for this bike but we'll see. Thank you for trying to help me though.

Sorry to hear that Dave. Inspection found both the controller and display you sent back tested good, which only leaves the wheel.

It is my understanding you want to just drop by with the whole bike since you are fairly close. That should make things a lot easier, our mechanic said that we should be able to swap out the motor while you go get lunch. Any day this week is fine.
