GPS in a straight line with excellent satellite triangulation is accurate enough

GPS on a a twisty mountain trail is no where close to being accurate
Look at this new section of trail I recorded on my Garmin Oregon

This is with my GPS set to record a track point as fast as it can to get as many track points as is possible.

The trail is not squared off like the gps shows
It is rounded.

The GPS cuts corners and looses distance.

A properly calibrated wheel sensor that stays in contact with the ground is way more accurate than the GPS that we consumers use.

It's almost impractical to properly calibrate a wheel sensor without gps - not impossible but impractical... then again it depends on how accurate you want

For consumers on bicycles the garmin approach of continually doing a wheel circumference calibration from longer baseline GNSS reception is likely the best approach and very accurate. The real-time speed is entirely based on the wheel speed but it is also calibrating the wheel in real-time - you could lose air pressure and it will compensate

Phones' GPS are the worst mostly because of lousy antenna subsystems with high multipath susceptability and below par signal reception

In cars and motos the speedometer are deliberately set to read a little high, more so on motos so even a consumer GPS is likely better, at least most of the time

OTOH there are industrial GNSS systems that will blow everything out of the water in terms of speed accuracy. Even the "lower-end models" will track well over 800 signals and have a speed accuracy <3cm/s (<~0.04mph) and update at 100 times per second (vs. 1 per second consumer) - e.g. https://hexagondownloads.blob.core.w...duct-Sheet.pdf

Even the unicorn of a well calibrated wheel speed sensor can't match that!

I was talking about bike meters that you can set the wheel circumference
That type of meter is going to give you way more accurate mileage than GPS can on non straight/curvy paths

Post #89 on this page is an example of this
I just received my Luna X1 ebike on Holloween :) It's an amazing bike and the price point is awesome My Luna X1 weighs 55 pounds. Not too bad at all for an Ebike. My carbon fat bike with a BBSHD weighs 58.5 pounds The first time I pulled the X1 front wheel out of the shipping box, I was taken back by how heavy the wheel was.

I knew the X1's mileage was not correct because of a ride I had done many times and knew the mileage

In post #89 I reported this
I set up a bike meter on the front wheel using a magnet sensor
I rolled out the bike on the floor with me on it to get the wheel circumference
The tire pressure was set before I did this

The X1 mileage was 35.6 miles
The Garmin Oregon GPS mileage was 31.67 miles
The bike meter mileage was 33.4 miles

33.4 miles is way closer than the other two figures

...
There are just too many variables - there are going to be times when a GPS is better (the oregon is not a terribly accurate one and has a lot of susceptibility to multipath) and times when a wheel speed meter is better

Did you set your GPS to log at one point per second or did you have the logging set to "auto"? That makes a big difference and I wouldn't trust what the oregon reports on the UI regardless, I'd look at the 1pt/sec log data for the distance and would expect what the oregon reports to be low. I'd also look at the log and if any of the 1pt/sec data points are obviously bad, remove them from the log.

The oregon supports the wheel speed sensor, did you try it with that: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-12843-00 that may give you the best results although I'd still set it to log at 1pt/sec too

You have posted three numbers but how do you *know* what the actual distance is? What is the gold standard you are comparing too?

I'm not asking all this to be awkward, it's part of what I do professionally so I tend to look at this stuff very critically, so no offense meant

Here in the Pacific Northwest we need to have fenders for our bikes as it is wet and muddy most of the year. Has anyone put fenders on the X1, if so how are they working out. Especially interested in a good fit for a rear fender. Can take the fender off for the Summer months.
Still waiting for the new X1 to ship.

Did you end up picking a fender? I'm in the PNW and looking for a rear fender. I got the mucky nutz fender and it isn't long enough.

Hello everyone.. today I experienced a error 5 on my x1… it was pretty random… can’t think of anything out of the ordinary that would cause this… connections seem done any suggestions?

I don't know what Error code 5 is?

I found an error code 5 as a throttle error which is weird because I never use the throttle … I unplugged it the day I received my bike … I was caught in bad rain driving home the other day not sure if water found it’s way to the module that controls the throttle/display causing this? I’m a little baffled lol… thank you for the response

I unplugged my throttle also a long time ago.
I put some electrical tape over the plug
No issues ever with that so far

Yeah I did the same thing I wonder if the water shorted it out… because it’s the same wiring harness… hmmmm any thoughts?

The water would have to be in a small puddle in order to short across a couple pins
I would think you could just bang the connector a couple times and all water would go out.

I would pull the motor side cover off and dry out all the connectors on all the wires

scratch that the error code is back

I blew the X1 drivetrain out this morning in the 100 °F desert heat. Luckily, I had already completed 3 miles of the climb and was able to pedal back without PAS. I'm not sure what broke yet but it sounds to me like it's most likely the plastic "Silent Gear" upgrade. It sounds and feels like a few teeth broke off. I wasn't even riding hard at all.

Looks there is 6 months warranty on motor and components so I'm hoping this should be covered since I've only had the bike for 3 months. However, if it's that silent gear upgrade, I think I will replace it with the factory metal gear.

I will update this post once I get word back from Luna Support tomorrow... Stay tuned....

Incredible news to report on this issue! - I broke the Peek Gear on a Sunday. I shipped my Bafang motor back to Luna Cycle on Tuesday. It arrived at their shop on Wednesday. By Thursday morning it had already been repaired and shipped back to me on Friday. It arrived at my door today (Saturday) morning! Is that insane or what? I can't tell you how happy I'am with Luna Cycle support and repair. These guys are amazing! If there is anyone out there who is reading the X1 forum and trying to decide whether they should buy an EMTB from Luna Cycle or direct from a Chineese company, use my experience with this repair as a lesson. Could you even imagine how long my bike would have been broken if I had to ship my motor back to mainland China? If you have ever shipped anything to China you also already know that the only way to track an item is to use air shipment from any of the big carriers. A 10 lb. item like the motor would have cost me about $350 each way to ship to China and back. Then just think of all the time it would have taken to repair it and get back to me. I would estimate 2-3 months. Let's just also consider that it is the summer right now. Everyone is riding hard and likely there are a lot of repairs coming into Luna Cycle at this time. The fact that their customer service and repair techs are that good to do a turn around on a warrantee repair right now speaks volumes for just how great this company is. Thank you Paxtana! You and your team are excellent. I'm extremely grateful for the excellent support that you and your team provide.

The gear from Bafang m600 is now a steel gear (it used to be nylon a few years back and melting regardless of output)....

Believe that is your 'shunt mod' for ludicrous option. Done 'aftermarket' and the amber colored solder flux was not cleaned off. Not ideal, but not likely hurting anything, either. Photo is a little small/low res to tell if there is any additional issue there. If water got in, a main concern would be any white/fluffy/crusty deposits on the board - especially if they happen to be between adjacent pins on any of the smaller components on the board. Typical example: https://www.westaby.net/cleaning_images/before%202.JPG

Do X-1s have serial numbers, and if so, where would I find it? I've looked in all the usual places with no luck. I'm posting my medium-frame X-1 on Craigslist and they're asking for S/N. Will see if they accept it without, but it would be nice to have in any case. Keeping my large-frame!

Thanks, paxtana!

Think I finally solved my sudden shutdown / sudden dying / no error codes issue! May have to make a post to gather all info and details, but since I first mentioned it here in this thread...
Unboxing & assembly: This bike is shipped in a box so some assembly required. If you are unsure on how to assemble the bike and also setup it up (checking the fork and shock pressure and adjusting the derailleur) you can watch the 2 unboxing videos we linked or you can also go to your local bike shop to have it assembled

TL;DR version - The bike started 'cutting out' / going completely dead whenever moderate power is drawn for pedal assist. This first started last December at 25-30% battery charge, but then it started happening once or twice a month at generally higher charge levels...40, 50, 60%+. Finally it died one day in June with 76% battery - and wouldn't come back on. This was accompanied by a 'burnt electronics' smell coming from the controller end of the battery pack and about 2.5V at the terminals, instead of the expected ~52V.

I ended up tearing down the pack and measuring each parallel group individually...all were ~4.1 V, except for groups 11, 12 and 13. They were about 3.65volts. So apparently the BMS wasn't charging / equalizing those groups effectively - and they were probably going under voltage when higher power was drawn, resulting in the controller shutting down.

In order to save the pack, I went ahead and bought a new BMS...and what the heck... 14S BMS is essentially the same price as 13S BMS - so figured I might as well throw one more parallel battery group in series while everything was torn down!

So back from a Sunday evening ride and seems to be working much better. No cutouts and more power!

Curious, any word or update on the July, 2021 ship date? I know there is a delay but wondering if anyone has a revised ship/est receive date - I’m excited to get my new X-1!

Currently the shipment is still on the water. Should arrive to the shipping port any day now. Then it will be clearing customs, then drayage to warehouse, then shipping and any requested mods will begin. Thank you for your patience so far.
