    DIY Ebike Toolbox

Here is a list of tools we think are almost mandatory for every Ebike Builder to have for builds and repairs.

Multi-meter - so essential for basic trouble shooting. As essential as an air pump to a regular bicycle rider.\

    Wire cutter/sripper

Soldering kit or crimping kit - sorry..but a big part of ebike building and repair is to do your own electrical wiring.

Shrink tube and shrink wrap - makes electrical wiring so much cleaner....a great replacement for the old school electrical tape

Zip ties - essential for cleaning up wiring and some unexpected quick fixes. we strongly suggest black color since most ebike wires are black.

    Yeah,

And though not a tool or super-critical, about a dozen spokes for the electric driven wheels are something I keep in the eBike Toolbox, since it probably equates to replacing a couple per year. But my setup includes hub motors, which requires custom length spokes which aren't available locally, and I don't like paying sales tax anyway, so I order them to size from wheelbuilder.com.

And a heat gun for the shrink tubing.

commuter ebikes Regular lighter works great for heat shrink. :)

I totally agree with Eric. At some point I even carried my Lithium dremel tool with me with cutting wheels and drill bits... along with a small butane powered soldering kit.. However, reliability has gotten so good that I am leaving most of my power tools at home now... Only carry the essentials now: chain tool, cutters and screwdrivers along with hex drives and assorted wrenches, air pump and 3 replacement tubes (I have a trike)

I now carry bear spray with me where every I go. So far I have been able to outrun dogs. It may not always be possible. And if you have extreme issues with 2 legged animals, it may be a life saver. Remember to call 911 and an ambulance if you use it.
