Can BBS02 and BBSHD be used with a 36v battery?

No it cannot. 38v is the lowest it can be set. If you were using a 36 V nominal battery the controller would shut down the system when it is still about 75% full.

The lowest practical configuration is 12S (a 44v nominal pack)

edit: while this is still not possible with stock, you could try aftermarket firmware https://github.com/danielnilsson9/bbshd-fw

Why not just reprogram the controller and change the low voltage cutoff setting?

Changing lvc is reprogramming (technically just changing the configuration)

38 is the lowest the lvc can be set in the config, the lowest the firmware will accept.

Or sell the 36V battery and get a 48V one? I live in Toronto and already have a BBS02. Not sure I need another one right now, but who knows?

It is now possible for BSSHD to run with a lower battery voltage by using my open source bbshd-fw firmware implementation. It does not yet support BBS02 but I'm working on it.
