Luna X1 New Cassette what length chain

Stock Luna 38 tooth chainring
New Eagle GX 126link chain
New ZTTO 11-46 cassette - The stock Luna 11-50 Eagle cassette was replaced.


I took the bike to a LBS and gave them the new parts. The LBS installed the new ZTTO 11-46 cassette and new chain. The stock setup was 124 link chain length.

The LBS shortened the chain to 116 links. My question is this too short? What length should I be at?

The ZTTO 11-46 tooth cassette is junk. We tried three chains and they all jumped over the cassette under heavy pedaling. We tried to adjust the B screw to no avail. 3 new chains and they all would skip over the teeth on the cassette. $150 in chains! 2 SRAM GX and 1 Shimano M9100. Just went back and ordered a SRAM NX PG-1230 cassette and another chain. LBS tried to get the ZTTO to stop jumping but no luck. $300 bucks thrown away!

I have had excellent luck with sunrace all steel cog cassettes - they are very affordable too... the all steel cogs last a very long time too... I've had three on two different bikes and think they're the best thing going, especially for electric

I've been using shimano $30 chains but I don't think it matters that much

I'm with you on steel cassettes...and steel cassette hub bodies too. These powerful Bafang mid-drives are relatively hard on drivetrains.

Well I differ in opinion on the "hard on drivetrains"... I don't really thing they are all that hard at all if properly tuned and ridden (albeit important if's)... I got >3000mi on the last chain and it had very little stretch (~1-1.5mm overall) when I replaced it

116 links should not be too short for that setup. How many gears is the cassette or freewheel? I've had trouble with chains skipping on new builds. New chains, too. My build has a 11t - 34t cassette with a 46T chainring and had massive skipping with a 9-speed cassette. I changed to an 8-speed cassette and a new 8-speed chain and all my problems went away. My chain on this setup is now right at 114 links.

My Shimano 9-speed derailleur adapted easily to 8-speeds. All that I needed was a new 8-speed thumb shifter. It's the shifter that determines whether it's 7, 8 or 9 speeds.

Does your setup work fine on some gears and always skip on others? Mine would run fine on gears 7 through 1 but the 8th always skipped constantly and the 9th gear skipped under load many times. Talking to the LBS they didn't have a clue.

So to update...

Chain slipping was in different gears depending on how the B screw was set. Never could find a setting to stop all gears from slipping no matter the chain length. The LBS spent an hour trying to find any setting that would stop the chain slipping.

I went back to a new Eagle SX 12 speed cassette and stock 124 link chain. No more chain slip. The ZTTO 11-46 tooth cassette with the Eagle sx derailleur did not work. We tried 3 chain lengths upto 122 links with no change. That was a $300 learning experience.
