E-BMX friction drive from cordless saw

I'm just starting this thread to have a place to park info and pics for this project. I have bought a very used Ryobi 18V cordless circular saw, with charger and a barely alive 5S / 1P lithium battery for $30 at a pawn shop. The DeWalt 18V seems to be common, if any are interested in something like this.

    What is your project goal?

Well.... next time someone accuses you of being an e-bike snob you can show up on a 30 year old huffy powered by a 10 year old Ryobi saw that has been lashed on with duct tape :)

More seriously, it seems like a interesting if wacky way of powering an ebike. These types of projects are allway a good way to get the old grey matter firing on three out of four cylinders without breaking the bank on new gear.

I had a friction drive on a 26" cruiser when I was kid. It was home built and used a power products 2stroke lawn mower engine. Does that circular saw have a variable speed trigger? If not maybe you could adapt one from a drill. I used to work in a shop that fixed power tools for contractors. We saw a lot of drills not so much the saws. The power density wasn't quite there for saws yet. They were available but hadn't really caught on yet.

This project is about getting a teen child's BMX running under electric power for the absolute lowest possible price (Gotta get them addicted to good things early). If this appeals to anyone, be aware that there are 60V cordless circular saws (and other voltages), plus...some of the newer models are brushless. I'll have to check if the trigger is variable speed, but that wasn't a big priority right now...

If the priority is long range, or high performance...this isn't the project for you.

Cool! I love simple, cobbled, home builds. Kudos for getting a youngster going on such things!!!

Been working insane amount of overtime since one of the crew left for a better job, but...now I'm back to working only 12 hours a day, so hopefully will make some progress soon. All parts have arrived, I have only to put them together and take pics...

                Hi all !
I was reading through this forum yesterday, gaining knowledge and getting ideas. So i thought i would sign up and share my first one.

My first build was a friction drive using a weed eater motor, hand tools, and bar stock from band saw It probably cost me about $120 in parts and the motor was free. It vibrated like mad, but was a fun first build... Mongoose XR-75 build

My son has an electric bicycle that I am thinking about mounting a weed eater motor on the front wheel to get some more top end. So it will be pedal/electric/gas powered
The successful people prefer to make the most of every situation. It has always been like this and there is no mystery in the fact that nowadays being organized and proactive demands so much effort that it becomes an ultimate prerequisite for achieving success. For many, this is also a goal that we stay focused on every year, every month, every day of our lives.

Welcome Jon. I can relate. I had a few DIY friction engine builds, too. Hard to beat free motors, which amazingly are all over the place for things like this.

IF you are worried about noise, look at the Solex type mufflers. Big can with small exit tube. Quietest style I've experienced. Not most powerful....
