    Serious Hill Climbing with kids in tow. What gearing and motor for a cargo bike

    My wife and I live in the foothills outside Salt Lake City and just purchased a Yuba Boda Boda V3 that we'll share for errands around the neighborhood and possible jaunts into the valley. The plan is to portage our daughters on the back and together they weigh close to 100 lbs. The main road up to our house maxes out at between a 15-16% grade. There are less steep routes, but they're longer and I'm lazy. The stock bike is setup with a 42/32/22 triple in the front and 11-32 cassette. Looking at the Luna BBS02, the smallest front cog is a 46T. Would we be better served by a BBSHD or do we keep the front derailleur and add a second 30T ring to realistically carry loads up these inclines with the BBS02?

    I would get a hybrid drive. That is a 3spd with a cassette or 3 times 8 cog cassette means 24 speeds in the rear wheel. Picking the right cassette will give you all or any ratios you need. Luna sells one. http://lunacycle.com/sram-dd3-igh-3-...-with-shifter/

    I have a Sturmey - Archer http://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/pro.../cs-rk3-silver One nice thing about the S-A hub is that it is compatible with your 3spd front derailleur shifter.

      Thanks for the suggestion. I've never seen a 24 speed rear wheel before. That's interesting. I think I'll give the 46T front cog a try and if I find the gearing isn't low enough, it's nice to know we can mount an IGH with a cassette.

      Got the same sturmey atcher gives better range than a rohloff! With dual front ring. Really not needed and bad chain line. This replace the function of triple crank gear. And allows shifting at stop. I back pedal on shift.
      My bbs02 just does not have the cooling for heavy duty use. With this hub, A 44 front ring lekkie will get full performance of motor on top speed. 32 to 14 would be nice on cassette.Get the bbshd for heavy duty use. Get a temp probe if you want to obsess.

    Luna BBSHD hotrodded and a 52V will eat that hill. For all hills it's recommended for low gears to keep high rpm up and not fry the controller.

          I have a Yuba Mundo set up with BBSHD, Luna 42T chainring and a 52v 13.5ah battery. The hills in my area are such I am often in the lowest gear on my 7 speed cluster in order to keep the RPM's up on steep hills hauling my 60 lb daughter around.

          I'm really glad I got the BBSHD, an excess of power on a loaded cargo bike is a good thing.

            Spinning Magnets write-up on IGH's peaked my interest, I'd like to try one of the 3 speeds and see how it works out.

              If it were me I would go for the HD in your situation. I have an 02 and a HD and while the 02 is still a fantastic mid drive I think the HD would be much better suited to your towing needs.

                  Cool build, I wonder why he went with the hydraulic linear pull brakes over disks? My Mundo does pretty good with it's stock 7 speed and BBSHD/52v 13.5 ah set up, it'll climb the very steep hills around here with a passenger no problem, I do it daily. One thing I really like about the bike is with the long wheelbase it rides like a motorcycle, it's a blast to ride on the windy roads we have around my neighborhood, feels stable, a totally different experience than my full suspension MTB's or shorter Hardtail bikes. One of the first things I did was install a a Big Dummy fork, they are solid and I trust them.
