Cyclone 3000 left side drive; is it possible?

There are so many questions I could ask about the cyclecone3000, that I had to do real thinking to eliminating the foolish ones (I hope).

I was wanting to mount the motor on the left side for a single speed drive. I figured out that the free wheel ratcheting on the motor would prevent that because I can't turn it around, right?

So now I think I might be able to use a second drive chain drive on the left side to keep the human powered chain from wearing out the sprockets too fast. And knowing how most people don't care, I do not expect to find photos of a rig like that.

So I have got to ask if having a different gear reduction on the left side will affect the right side adversely.
    • Like having an effect of the right side chain slip off the sprockets?
    • And is there infact a way to mount a second crank set on the left side, to ratchet in the correct direction? Probably not if I want the crank to free-wheel. So I may have to live with left side crank moving when the motor is moving; but at what speed?
    • So is there a left side free wheel to hold the sprocket, that I could mount on the motor?

Also I have severe arthritis in both knees so I have to keep the cranking slow. I am going to have to use crank arm shorteners just to keep my knees from bending too much.

And a few other questions about the motor that I am about to buy (cyclone 3000)
    • How often should I lubricate the planetary gears?
    • Is there a wiring diagram for this motor some where on the internet?

I have been thinking about how devise a reverse one-way bearing on the motor. Possibly undo the weld that holds the sprocket clamping device to the one-way bearing and turn it around. Then re-tack together.

The Cyclone 3000W motor is available is both a clockwise and a counter-clockwise rotation version, as are the motor freewheels it uses. Luna Cycle may or may not stock these items, but if you order direct from the manufacturer Cyclone-TW you can find them.

As far as the specifics of the rest of your project, I know there is a lot of stuff out there, allowing chain-drives on either side. Many tandem bicycles use these components.

It may take some research and probably also some degree of imagination, as you'll be creatively-combining components, but your plans are certainly achievable.

      Best of luck with them!

Too bad I didi not know that be fore buy the motor. but without a free wheel on teh rear sprockets I would be push against the plaetary gears when I want to back my bike out of a parking rack. so I am just going to have to use the right side drive. with an over priced cassette. 40t

It's not going to hurt anything by doing that--pushing against the planetary gears backing out of a parking rack. That is not going to cause you any problems, or damage. Every Cyclone-equipped bike is going to do that whenever it briefly rolls backward (unless people pick up their back wheels when backing--which they don't, or won't).

Just saying... Don't worry about that.

I was just thinking that if it hard to do, it will hurt my arthritic knee. I guess it will be easyer that truning by hand......bu how much I can only speculate.

              Hello, jawnn.

Listen: I too have arthritis. You have both my understanding, and my sympathy.

You're right, that when backing, there will be a small amount of resistance generated--as the motor is forced to turn.

I can assure you, that it will not be very much though.

Yet if needed, you can also just switch to a higher gear (harder-to-pedal gear) before pushing the bike backwards, and it will further greatly reduce that resistance.

This would be easiest to do, obviously, if you are using an internal-gear-hub--because you can shift while stopped--and then put it back into a lighter gear again when you are ready to take off.

Best of luck with your project!

              Take care,
