Went to my local bike shop today....

Went to my LBS to buy a bike today to start my first build but was surprised at lack of inventory....say's he is having trouble getting bikes.
I looked online and am considering a GT Mountain bike as a start. Is there any brand that I should stay away from due to compatibility issues with anything ? Advice ?

I guess any too cheap bike. Just don't buy online since you really can't see and feel the materials use.
