BBSHD power rating

I have a new KHS500 with the BBSHD, purchased from Luna. I am trying to understand the power rating.

Does it come stock at 750 watts?
But you can crank it to 1500, with a programming change? If so, how?
You can upgrade to ludicrous at 2500 watts for even more power, but at a cost of about $200-300

My stock power is decent, except sometimes in sand it won't accelerate from a stand-still on loose sand going up a slight grade. Just have to unweight the bike and then it's OK and it will accelerate. Sand is hard to move out of, when stopped. I wonder if 1500 watts would be better in that situation.

Obviously the ludicrous would do it, but at extra cost and certainly would chew up more power.

Hey there ,
so what display are you using ?
My 750 display, and most , show you a live watt readout always, so regardless if what the bbshd case says , the programming and the controller determine the max watts , and under full load you should see your max reading.
my luna pulls 1650ish max , but I wouldn't do that continuous for more than very short bursts

Thanks, Steampunk. My display, the 750 display, reads about 1,600 at maximum. I don't like to go that high for long, as I figured it wasn't too good for the battery. So does that mean that I am set up for 1500 and not 750 watts? So now my only option is Ludicrous at 2,500? I don't need more speed, but I guess it will give me more torque at lower speeds? Like going from zero to 5mph in sand?

I'm not too hot on spending more cash for just a minor thrill!

Honestly, pulling you from a dead stop , on fat tires , in sand is a Big Ask for most motors . The 160nm of torque that the bbshd has is double the rating of most high end motors and is certainly very capable .
I usually pedal as I'm applying throttle in high torque situations

Thanks for the comment. Makes sense. I usually just unweight the bike and use my feet for balance, as balancing can be tricky in that situation! Unweighting makes it easier for the motor to spin the rear wheel and the bike also floats better. Then when it gets up to 1-2MPH, I can re-weight. But even Ludicrous won't help that much?

Sounds like ludicrous would reduce a standard 52v battery charge cycles , from pulling 50 amps , when it's designed for 30 . Seems like it would need a bigger better battery for long term viability , which is far more expensive than the simple $250 for luna ludicrous...so many options to weigh!

Wow. Thanks for the article. That is eye opening. So it's $200 for Ludicrous and another $600 for the premature battery wearing out. Yikes. Not worth it (to me). It was also interesting about the salt water. I don't ride in it, but I ride very near it. I should be rinsing off the bike more often. I assume my bike will not live a long long life, but it will be one well lived. Like a wild rock star!

All Luna custom builds with ludicrous option use 30Q cells for the Wolf option.

Samsung rates 30Q at 15A continuous per parallel string, there are 4 parallel strings, meaning 30q cells in a 4p configuration have a rating of 60A continuous. Given that the controller is set up by default for 50A peak, that is more than enough. In fact the peak rating for 30Q is 25A per parallel string, 4x25=100A peak. Now obviously we do limit that with a bms rated for 50 cont / 70 peak, but yeah. Our batteries can handle ludicrous no problem.

You will see more sag with a higher discharge rate, and the more power you are using the faster it will run out, but it doesn't really affect cycle life unless you are taking it to such a low depth of discharge that you can't keep it within optimal state of charge; and since you can also program the ludi for greater range by reducing current in instances you need to, that can also be addressed if need be.

So my new KHS500 bike without the ludicrous option can just be upgraded without changing its battery? So no impact on batt life? Although obvously if you are cranking it a lot you're going to shorten your ride!

have you considered changing the chainring, and or rear cassette. I changed my chainring to a 30th and rear cassette is a sunrace steel 11-46. My bike originally had like a 11-34 and changing it made a huge difference. I can go in sand easy and even with a trailer behind mine loaded it will spin tire and sink before it will stop pulling
