Spinningmagnets, could you please show more photos of your aluminum channel mount? How did you attach the Cyclone to the aluminum channel? Did you use the two existing Cyclone mounts or did you make a wider mount?

If your BBSHD is in the proper gear and is still getting hot, then you need more motor. The Cyclone might be overkill, but there is no motor selection inbetween the BBSHD and Cyclone yet. For a loaded cargobike on a steep and long uphill, I would move up to the Cyclone, and slide your BBSHD onto a light street commuter, or an off-roader.

Be aware the affordable Cyclone has a simple and flexy mount. There is a thread here with examples of a variety of ways builders have reinforced the bracket.

Thanks for the responses - I can easily see how the extra 10 amps output would be very tempting to tap into on a regular basis; however, I'm thinking, if I can be disciplined to stay nitty with amps (e.g. keep it closer to 5-12 amps with pedal assist), the cyclone may be the right fit. Currently my BBSHD is pushing a 100 pound cargo bike and I'm always concerned about taxing the motor too much (since it gets pretty hot when I'm loaded down and going up a moderate grade) - thus, all else being equal - maybe the cyclone is the right fit for the job?

I agree with sather, the BBSHD has a higher reduction, so the motor spins at a much higher RPM, plus it's a physically smaller motor. The Cyclone has a larger motor, and is capable of more power, but...only if you drain more power from your battery. Cyclone for fun, BBSHD for range...

The BBSHD is limited to 30 amps output and the Cyclone is limited to 40 amps output. So if you are human you will probably want use that extra power and drain the same battery 25% faster. Also, I notice I get far more range with my BBSHD when using pedal assist vs. throttle. I own a Cycone and find it impossible to stay off the throttle. The power is intoxicating. If you were able to keep the Cyclone below 30 amps, you would probably get similar range to the BBSHD.

    BBHSD vs. Cyclone Efficiency

I've got a BBHSD on a cargo bike - it does great BUT I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a Cyclone 3000. Without getting too heavy into e-bike math - all else being equal (e.g. bike, 20ah pf battery pack, weight, flat terrain, power output) - any one know which is a more efficient motor from a battery drain perspective?
Working...
