E-Bike makers are conspiring to prevent hod rodding their lame ass products

"Under the Confederation of European Bicycle Industry (CONEBI), 15 national bicycle industry associations in Europe and 68 companies have signed onto an industry-wide commitment to prevent owners from hacking their e-bikes for more speed and power."

Whats with that word "hacking" as if its somehow criminal to play with and modify your own property.

"Hacking is the act of identifying and then exploiting weaknesses in a computer system or network, usually to gain unauthorized access to personal or organizational data."

You can't "hack" your own stuff just like you cant steal your own stuff.

I got a super idea !!!! Lets make e-bikes totally suck on the entire continent of Europe with some dumb ass 250 watt 15 mph rule !! That way e-bikes don't sell and people keep using their cars making both problems worse.

Not true! You may not like it but

If you modify the electrical box you own on the house you own to bypass the meter - you have broken the law (theft of service)... there are many other examples of "stealing services" through modifying ("hacking") personal property - this is just an old and egregious form

Presently many cars and even motos come with subscription based capabilities... nothing changes on the hardware you *own* (nor the software), just a code you have to pay for and if you manage to modify the vehicle you own to enable those capabilities without paying the subscription fees you have also broken the law ... I don't like this and will avoid it kicking and screaming but it exists and is only growing and for me to ignore it would make me ignorant...

I never think twice about any of that. I'm an unauthorized repairman of everything I get my hands on. And I get technical details for my unauthorized repairs from my internet PC running unauthorized copies of windows 7 and 10. I used to have unauthorized OS on my Sprint Galaxy 5. But Sprint shut down and I had to get a Galaxy 10 that is hacker proof. I sure miss my spam free Galaxy 5. People still hacking on the 10 but its never been broke. These Bafangs are hack proof. Nobody can read the code that's in it to hack it. Only select copies that were leaked from the factory are available to burn into motors. But its like rolling dice that the code is good for the controller version. Half of the world is unauthorized. So Ill start getting worried when China starts paying back royalties for all things they pirate. Hah.

Oh wow. Somebody wrote new software for this. And its got great features that can stop motors from burning up. I need to dig into this more. This looks like software that everybody should be using.

Well its only 4 months old so they are still tuning it up. It would seem they are modifying code written for another motor that was not locked down. And it seems to be working pretty well generally. Mostly for BBSHD but they got it working on BBS02B generally. Few people are testing all this, so its all still being worked out. Seems there are buggy issues with BBS02A, but that controller was never up to snuff. I will no doubt load this on my BBS02B motor but I will wait until they do more testing. My motor is not even on my bike yet, so I'm in no rush. But the features of this new software are really great. The worry people have is if the software has problems on their specific motor, then they cant go back to the factory software, since its locked down. They have to flash the 52v software that's floating around. And that software has none of the latest revisions after it was leaked to the internet. So this is too soon for most everybody. But its looking pretty good so far.

Bikes are the last thing I'm worried about not being able to 'hack' or even do any self service on. There are way more products I depend on more and that cost more that are already or will soon be pretty much locked and controlled by the mother ship. Among other things you better hope that mother ship stays in existence or you suddenly 'own' a large paperweight that you will have to pay someone to take away.

I'm not concerned about any kind of stuff per say. Life is being dragged into a rental situation. Your born with nothing, you work hand to mouth to pay the rents, and then you die with nothing. And all of your lifes sweat equity belongs to the corporate giants that rule the world. The idea of inheritance will be reduced to a sentimental hand out of trinkets rather than a financial one. And that's the real shame of the future. People think the president runs the country. But even today, its the corporate media juggernaut that's running things in a big way. Indirectly, by vilifying on world broadcast, any ideas that run contrary to the media plan. The power of the people is being sapped away by the media trickery that herds the ignorant to cast their votes for free handouts. Handouts that are paid to the corporate giants from the tax dollar pool. So the people grow more dependent, and the giants grow even bigger. Housing everywhere is being bought up by the giants. Cars are being computerized to run by rental. The day will come when few will actually own their 2 biggest life assets. And everything else you need is yet another rental stream, as you live hand to mouth till the day you die. Hacking is just a way for the clever to gain a bit of luxery they didn't previously have. The world is being changed in a fundamental way. And the more people that zone out, the less likely it gets that we can take back the power of the people. And that's the plan of corporate domination of the world. I'm surprised that the Russians haven't sent an army of Oligarks to buy American allegiance with free handouts. But I guess all those Trillion dollar yats they been building says that they are simply too greedy to hand out their cash. China may end up being more cunning and onerous to the American way that's already slipping away.

Oh bummer. I was trying to hold onto a shred of optimism. Hoping that the Mueller report was mostly like the Sadam Husain WMD report. Riddled with hot air. But there's no denying that the Chinese have been here for a long time. They just discovered they even have a Chinese police station in NY. Hah. In EU if you want a fast E bike, you get a registered, licensed, and insured "Pedelec" which would be a Moped here. It's considered a different class of vehicle. I think 50kph (31mph) is the speed limit for those, which is higher than our 28mph.

As a very young lad I was taken to a 1910 steam operated pig iron blast furnace in my hometown in Canada.

I was most captivated by a spinning contraption with springs, levers, and moving arms with large brass balls on the ends. Everything in the whole Powerhouse was moving, hissing and running away, but the "merry go round" had me, and my daddy knew it.

As I grew older and could understand words, he would chuckle at my time to time bringing up the spinning thingy.

When he thought I could more fully grasp the concept of the randomly spinning thing I loved, he explained that the merry go round "Controlled " everything else in the whole steel plant!

It was called the Governor. Thru counter weights, springs, gravity, and centrifugal force, the governor decides the rpm of the entire operation.

That's what a governor does. According to what design parameters the governor was constructed for, it, (governor-government) decides how things run. maybe we need better designed "governors". sounds like somethin to vote on

The government gave me a drivers license for vehicles up to 80.000# and 80' in length with unlimited horsepower (500+ is common). I just assume a 2hp bicycle should be OK.
