Petition to BAN Presta tire valves?

Why are these dreadful things even allowed on eBikes? Good lord, I'm gonna run around all over town looking for an "adapter" which I'm certain will cost a pretty penny.

Sorry about the rant but I just can't stand Presta valves/tubes. 1st thing I do if/when I get a Presta rim is to grab 21/64" drill bit and go Schrader tube. Insane....

What objections do you have to the Presta valve?

I understand that the Presta valve was made in order to fit into a more narrow rim. It is a myth that the Presta can tolerate higher pressures.

I did say BAN them from eBikes. Large majority of eBikes don’t use thin rims or require anything much over 50 PSI. I’m a tire pressure fanatic so “ease of use” and availability of compressed air input is of upmost importance to me.

I scrounged $3 adapter that I’m sure to lose and now able to put air into the tire. Trouble is, the adapter doesn’t operate with any tire pressure gauge that I own. Ugh....

I see. All of the bikes in our household have Presta valves. I bought a floor pump with a nice gauge which has fittings for both, and I only used the Schrader adapter once. I think I only spent about $25 on it.

I'm having a bit of fun but can appreciate many folks probably have what they need to deal with Presta. I'm just low rez and kinda agricultural about stuff so "if it ain't broke, don't break it". LOL...

Thx for the laugh, I was thinking the same thing.

My vote's for schrader but you can get adapters very cheap..50 cents each. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also voted "bacon". I've only had schraeder valves until my recent wheel build that required presta. They are a little more difficult to deal with in practice but I've found that presta valve equipped tubes seem to hold air much longer than schraeder. In my experience, a month or more vs. a couple weeks. That and the fact that every pump (floor and mini) that I've purchased in the last couple years came with adapters for both. Until presta takes my bacon away from me, I'm Team Presta.

I ditch the Presta whenever I can, Schrader have worked fine for me for decades. The adapters? Yeah they work, but why even NEED one? It's by and large a Schrader world out there...look around, why fight it with something that needs an adapter? I see NO difference between the two, in use. Presta on a fat tire bike rim especially irritates me!

              Tubeless is easier with presta

Suggesting Shrader valves be used on bikes is like suggesting bicycles have steering wheels, or foot pedals to shift gears. Presta valve is the clear standard, universal to the cycling world. And so it should be, as it is clearly superior technology. They are easier to pump up as there is less tension on the valve spring.

Ban shrader? - nah, shrader sucks, but I prefer to be in a world where we let people choose what they like rather than get all big-government on them with an imposed ban!

I have never needed to use an adaptor, BTW. grew up in dad's bike shop in the 70s, and still have about 10 bikes around my house - the only shrader valve is on the crystallite front wheel on the ebike - soon to be banished with a new mid drive tomorrow.

First change I make on a new bike is dump the rim-protectors they call tires and put schrader valve tubes into them.

My only complaint about Presta is having to get a Presta tube. If I already have a spare tube that fits, I'll welcome a new wheel into the family, no matter what its lineage.

When I recently laced up two 20" wheels though, they were Presta and I wasn't going to buy two new tubes too. Out came the drill.

I'm a complete dumb newbie about bikes, I bought a tadpole trike because of my age and it came with 3 Presta valves, The trike dealer was smart enough to include a small adaptor device on my back wheel valve in case I needed to get air where no presta attachments were available, I just hate the little thingie you must screw in and out to aerate the tire( it's a bit*$* with cold fingers) .

I'd be happy with schrader all the way but I'm just not all that bothered by presta and don't bother drilling out the rims. I have gauges for both and just carry whichever gauge is appropriate at the time - my shop air will handle either as will my pumps and I carry the little adapter (stuck on a schrader valve core tool so I don't lose the little bugger) in my tool bag...

HELL no, Presta all the way!! I was glad I found 26" disc rims with Presta valve holes when I was building up my bike. I like the built-in screw down cap to keep the junk out, and the threaded metal valve body with retaining nut makes it much easier to attach the pump head when pumping up the tube from flat.

I have well over 13,000 miles riding in the last 4 years and have never once felt the need to use gas station air. Why? Because I own and carry the proper pumps. I have a floor pump at home and mini-pump that I carry with me. They both work with both Presta and schrader valves, but they're much easier to use with Presta.
