    Tektro Dorado HD-E710 replacement brake pads and pad retaining bolt cotter pins

    I have Tektro Dorado HD-E710 hydraulic brakes on all of my bikes. On 2 of the 8 calipers, I had the brake pad retaining bolt cotter pins (see first photo) fall off after about 1000 miles of riding. In both cases, it was on the rear caliper.     Also, the brake pads are in a spring (see second photo) that can be purchased here http://www.tektro-usa.com/category.p...d=187&subcat=0, but Dorado HD-E710 is not on the compatibility list in the pad spring item description.     Good to know, I just installed one yesterday on the front of my FS bike. I was careful getting it set up until I had the disk in it, heard they're hell to get to release if you push the lever with no disk in there. Got it together no problem and I can see why people are using this brake, feels real nice and the disk is thicker than usual, more like a motorcycle disk. If you can offer any other tips on keeping these maintained I'd like to hear them. As much as I like the BB7's on my cargo bike I'm considering putting them on there too, I'm surrounded by steep hills and those brakes get a real workout.

      In lieu of a folded up business card, I use these, the regular version of which is specifically designed for this caliper: http://www.trpbrakes.com/category.ph...1284&catid=187.

      I learned the hard way to put a pad spacer in there 100% of the time when the rotor is removed. People, including mechanics, have a natural tendency to pull on levers.

      Sometimes when I replace my brake pads, the piston will push out while the space is empty (which is to say, when there are no brake pads in there). When this happens, one needs to manage to get the Park PP-1.2 linked above (and pictured below) in there. Often, the gap between the brake pads is too narrow to insert the PP-1.2, so I use a small regular screwdriver so that I can get a large regular screwdriver in there. I do all of this from the top end of the brake pads (where the pad retaining bolt is). Once the large regular screwdriver is in there, I rotate the large regular screwdriver which provides enough leverage to open the brake pads wide enough to accept the PP-1.2. I push in the PP-1.2 all the way, which sets the correct rotor spacing. The Tektro rotor is a liittle wider, but the PP-1.2, made for a standard width rotor, works for these Tektros.

      One could also have the (black plastic) pad spreader installed in the new pads whilst installing the new brake pads. That piston seems to want to take up any extra space. One could also consider using a plastic pry tool (as opposed to regular screwdrivers) so as not to abuse the brake pads.

        Thanks, good info, I knew saving those plastic spacers was a good idea. Want to learn more about working on hydro brakes, after rebuilding the calipers on my VW Bus last summer I felt like I could actually do this stuff.
