Yes hub motors often have high thermal resistance from winnings to air. So, it helps, there. Bafang controller has a good path a for heat to air, already.

also, you don't risk getting the controller wet venting a hub. Motors tolerate moisture better than controllers, since the latter need to maintain integrity of low level signals.

To be serious for a moment the BBSxx motors if ridden correctly don`t need all that, just keep in the correct gear and keep your cadence up and all will be well.

Why don't you duct tape a PC cooling fan to it. I'm proficient in CAD/CAM and own a 4 axis CNC machine. But I'm sure I couldn't be of any help to you. You want a better heat sink, I can make it, you want better cooling ideas, I can offer them.

Great response. You want to drill holes for more air, then plug them. Forgive me for not understanding. Maybe I need 1000 posts before you'll listen to a mechanical engineer who was simply trying to offer help

Nah, that's not something that would be beneficial. There's pretty good potting in the controller, which insulates it. Thermal path from MOSFETS to the case is thus MUCH better than the one to air inside the case. So, just blow more air on the case exterior if you are worried about this, don't destroy the water-tightness just to get air in there. It won't do much for cooling, and will hurt reliability, not help it.

You can add to the surface area of the cooling fins to more effectively improve cooling via the case.

Bafang cooling air vents

Has anyone ever drilled holes in the front and back of the side of a controller on a bafang to make cooling vents? I think it would help and then the holes could be corked or have magnets over them when there is water or moisture around.
