An awesome way to transport your eMTB and love camping off the beaten path

I came across the new 2018 Winnebago Revel 4X4 Mercedes Benz Camper Van today while sitting in a doctors office looking through magazines. I have been hoping Westfalia would one day import their Sprinter Camper Van, but that hasn't happened to date. It looks like Winnebago beat them to it.

Introducing the Winnebago 4x4 Revel. It's the perfect marriage of the Mercedes proven 4x4 Sprinter with the innovative engineering you'd expect from America...

I want one! Some big $$$ though...

What about the Valhalla. It comes with on demand air and bike tie down system.

If you are going to go for it go for the real deal! Notice the bike rack on the back and the electric bikes on the other sided (this was the guy that introduced me to electric bikes)...

If I was serious I think a Ford Transit would be a cost effective way to go to the great outdoors. They don't seem to offer 4x4 but you can have it custom configured.

There are some interesting comments on the internet about the long term reliability of the Sprinters, as in anywhere close to 100,000 miles and lot's of issues with the regen systems seems to crop up. Google it, it was an eye opener for me. Locally, a few years ago I had noticed the Lays potato chip distributor had gone to a real slick looking sprinter based van to deliver their product. An all aluminum big box van, with the Sprinter front end, but I immediately noticed the great attention to the detail whoever designed made to drag reduction. Even a "skirt", kind of like the semi trailers are now using, to clean up the air flow underneath. One of them would make a great conversion RV. BUT, in the last year or two, they have disappeared, they are now all Fords. I asked a delivery guy (he surprised I cared....) and he said their fleet maintenance people hated them (Sprinters) and that jived with the internet comment I had heard earlier from other fleet mechanics. The only people really happy with them it seemed were low time less then 50 K miles. Just a heads up, the Mercedes brand in this case may not be what you think. They sure look cool and I love that size of rig.

If you watch American Pickers you will notice they traded their Sprinter for a Transit with a 3.2-liter inline-five-cylinder Power Stroke.

I looked at one up close in a local motorhome dealer. It had 1,900+ miles and a retail price of $142,000+, but was up for sale for $107,000+. Still a crazy high price IMHO. it looked wonderful and was very well built. Lots of nice features too. The inside did seem very small, but that is to be expected. What struck me most was the narrow width of the rear bed; it's only 42" wide. No MTB is only 42" long, so bikes will have to have their wheel through the opening into the storage area to fit and aren't going to be easily stored under the bed while sleeping like one of their video shows. I ran into this with the Porsche Boxster S advertising. They show a pair of golf bags in the rear trunk in their brochure, but there is no way you can fit anything but kids clubs or possibly a couple par 3 iron only bags in there. Very misleading!

What I'd really like to see Mercedes Benz import to the USA is their Marco Polo Matrix Diesel Van based pop-top camper.

                  This thing is sweet!
