I am a big fan of IGHs, and recently Eric asked me to collect as much information about them as I could, and write-up an article. Its a new field for these combinations and there is not enough info posted about them yet. Here it is: http://www.electricbike.com/mid-drive-kit-igh/
The short story is: for the BBSHD, I'd only recommend a Nexus 3-speed. If that breaks, then the Alfine definitely would have broken. For a BBS02, an Alfine is a "maybe". Not for off-road, but if you run it on the street with a smooth application of power (no wheelies), then it might survive. The Alfine-8 has 5th gear as the strongest, and it should be your default "start off" gear.
Or a combination, 3 gear hub and 7 gear derailleur
Mine is from 1996 and is still ok!

Does anyone have any insight as to whether a mid drive system such as Bafang's 1000 watt mid drive can be used with a Shimano Alfine internal geared hub and if it is able to handle the torque of an electric drive.
