Luna Lone Wolf 680+: 9/3/19 Ride Report

People are always wondering how far can you ride with an eBike. Here's some stats from my latest ride which might give people some insight into this question.

Distance: 24 miles
Vertical Ascent: 1,100 feet of climbing
Average speed: 17mph
Conditions: city traffic, lots of stop and goes
Human Effort: Pedaling with some effort, a "light sweat", 2-3 pedal assist for first 18 miles, then 3-4 pedal assist last 6 miles
Bike: Luna Cycles Lone White Wolf 680+
Battery: 13.5ah battery
Motor: BBSHD with Ludicrous Mode upgrade
160lb rider


After this ride, the battery reads 50.7V when plugged into the charger. I believe this correlates to about 50% of the battery being discharged during this ride.

Does this mean I could go another 24 miles under these same conditions? I'm not sure how that works out, but I'm very satisfied to see the current charge when I got home, I was expecting a much lower charge based on the distance, speed, ascent and effort I put in pedaling.

For the most part I am very competitive with medium congestion city traffic and can easily draft large vehicles, riding 25mph without breaking a sweat in the level 2 pedal assist setting.

Below 30% i experience loss of power and cut off from voltage drop on acceleration. Never let it drop below20%. Hard on battery. Imho.

Gr8fun So if we set aside 30% of the battery to never be used, then this ride used up 63% of the battery? Still quite impressive.

At that speed similar to my bbs02. Unfaired. The electric bikes only use as much as you feed them. With bbsxx around 85%efficiency. You have the choice to use more electricity if you want to.
i am on a lwb recumbent. At 20 mph i get 12.5 watts per mile and top speed of around 38. Bbs02. That is with a fairing. Motor only. Cutting wind resistance is only way to really Increase range and speed without sacrificing range.
I guess you are doing around 17 wh per mile. Yes
recharge at 30%, cut off at 80% and well over 1000 cycles can be expected. Been riding electric since luna started. Beginning to experiiment with solar and faiirings, 13.5 ah 52v gives me close to 150 miles per day. Solar allows me to keep battery at safe, long life levels without range anxiety. No plug in charging that is my new rule.

you are at avout 14 wh per mile. Very good. Definately some good pedal effort. I would expect to see 18 wh without. Tried to edit out my mistake
680 wh in battery. Used half, 340 wh÷by 24 miles=
14+ wh / mile. Assuming a 100 % full battery. (58.8v)

The other day I rode my fatbike (Surly Wednesday with a Rohloff hub and a 17 AH battery) 16 miles. Up 3500', from 5500' to 8900', a steep and rocky motocross trail, a lot of pedaling and lot of not pedaling as it was so steep I had to stand on the pedals and lean forward to keep the front wheel down. When I got back down, and then back in the shop, the display was reading 50.9., considering the conditions, the non pedaling at times, and the heavy and draggy fatbike, I was happy with that. Started with 100%

I think it's educational to take your battery down to a lower then normal level, in the 40's I mean, from time to time just to get a handle on how much range is there, at those lower levels. I figure the battery is there to be used, not abused, but used! I don't worry at all about ending a ride with the volts reading mid to high 40's, under load, and then have it rebound to low 50's. On my third season I think on this LUNA battery, and it's hanging in there great.

Looks like over 30 wh per mile. Get a watt meter.

There is no objective measure of fun per mile.or in this case fun per watt. You really could have burned more.

U guys make me feel soooo lazy. I added a 2nd pack in parallel for 25ah at 58v and looking for more voltage and current now. Lol.....back to the real pedalers
