    Ein from South OC, Calif.

Hello all, I'm new to E-bikes but have been a tinkerer all my life. I've built my own FPV planes, SCUBA, astronomy, Tai Chi and still fix my own cars. I'm here to reduce my learning and more importantly, my mistake curve! I guess I'll ask my questions in the main forum...

Welcome Ein, what kind of ebikes are you most interested in? Off-road? Street? (hot rod or commuter?)

      Hi Spin,
My goal is a build for street and light mountain. I have a Jamis Dakar Comp that I would like to use for the donor. I've tried and tried to ask questions directly of Lunacycles but no response in email of phone?!?! It makes me wonder what do you do if you have a problem with one of their products!?

Right now is their busiest time of year, and normally they are actually pretty responsive. They are known for good customer service, so in the rare instance of a defective part, they are very likely to simply swap it out with a new part.

The Jamis Dakar Comp may have had some minor variations over the years, could you please find a pic on "Google images" that matches your frame shape and component group?

As an example, rear shock positioning may have changed, and many downtubes now have an "S" curve to them...

Also, does your year of Jamis have a 100mm wide BB, or maybe 73mm?

          Hi Spin,
Sorry for the late response. I thought there would be auto email if any activity....
Anyway, I finished my build yesterday and all worked 100% the first time. I used a 48V 13.5Ah battery as it was the only one available. (Of course, 1 day after I bought it, I get an email notice that a HUGE shipment of 52V batteries arrived at Luna) The Jamis Dakar Comp is a 68mm. The only problem I had was getting the motor assembly through the BB. A little filing took care of that. This thing has POWER! I can't imagine what it would be like if I had used a 52V battery. I can do wheelies in low gear! The only other issue and I'm writing this for first time builders, is, using the Lunacycle twist throttle, the rear speed shifter has to be moved. I would suggest using the left Thumb throttle and keeping the the speed shifter in its normal location. Lastly, the gear changer I don't see as a necessity if you shift carefully using the brake or peddle timing.

Call me nuts but I'm liking the right thumb throttle mounted on the left side. Had no other workable option when I put the Nuvinci 360 grip shift on the right side.

I also did thumb throttle on left to leave shifters alone. Works fine!

Nothing wrong with the battery that you have, 4 extra volts is only going to give more top speed and that would be only a couple of MPH. But if Luna or Bafang upgrade the controller to more amps then this will give alot more torque.
