Another SoCal eBiker Here - Hello Everyone

    Hello Everyone -

Just a quick introduction and test post. Not completely new to E-bikes. I had a BBS01 350W/36V hardtail as my first E-bike. Used it as a physical therapy program to recover form a couple surgeries and found out they are lots of fun. After riding it for six months I embarked on a custom build using a Soma B-Side V.2 belt drive frame that I hope to install a BBS02 750W/48V motor. I will be posting that in the build thread soon.

I enjoy riding my new Santa Cruz Hightower now after getting "somewhat" back in shape, but still wanted a mutlipurpose eMTB for local trail cruising and beach visits. Can't wait to get my Luna BBS02 installed and hit the road pedaling.

    Cheers!

          Hello welcome to the community...

not sure if you have made the purchase, i would suggest you to have a look at the BBSHD before pulling the trigger with the BBS02. The BBS02 is a great motor and there are no second thoughts about it. However the BBSHD is a good investment and upgrade when compared to the BBS02. Wishing to see more from you on the forum

          cheers..

I'm sure the power of that heavy beast is amazing, but I want to keep this eMTB a California Type 1 or 2 legal, so there is absolutely no question I can ride it on all local bike trails. Even the 750W 48V motor is going to have way more power than I need. Check out the gearing on my Soma B-Side BBS02 project, it's 50T X 28T (1.78). That calculates out to about 15.6mph at 90rpm cadence in 3rd on the 3spd IGH. This eMTB will serve double duty as a beach cruiser and loaner for others that want to ride off-road with us while I pilot my Santa Cruz Hightower. The 750W motor with that gearing will easily allow an inexperienced rider climb with us without falling behind (they'll probably be leading). Hopefully this ride will be a great commuter, mild off-road trail and beach cruiser all in one, with top speed around 18-20mph; at least that is what I am shooting for.

                    Hi Rider,
Your new BBS02 should have around twice the power of your BBS01. Enjoy it!
And I would think you'd also be fine riding at 28mph as a "Class 3" ebike on the streets (assuming you disconnect the throttle, and ride PAS only).

Hello BikeEV from The OC. I don't see any issues with E-bike police here in The OC yet; even at speeds up to 30mph on the streets. Off-road some MTBer's get a little weird when you pass them on a climb at a whole 6-8mph, but that's their issue not mine or the laws.

Just checked my gearing at a full 100rpm cadence in 3rd gear on BikeCalc's gear calculator. It comes in at 19.5mph, so I'd have to be spinning the cranks at 144rpm to hit 28mph. I don't know if the BBS02 750W will spin that fast without pedaling, but I can't do it.

Really looking forward to riding and enjoying it when done.
