I've always had trouble with tool less chain links. i broke a few Connex with 8s chains so I got the Rohloff Revolver2 chain tool to rivet them instead. Problem solved, until I decided to run 11s chain on an 8s bike. Chains last 2x as long, and with Mariposa sunflower wax maybe twice as long again. Since I did the zip tie mod the bike shifts very smoothly, so I thought I would give Connex another chance. first ride out chain skip under power in the top 3 gears.I took it to my LBS and he diagnosed it as a stiff Connex link. 2 problems with that 11s connex is $25, and Rohloff wants to sell you another Rohloff3 Revolver3($210) to do 10,11,12s chains. I thought of a lot of different things, ordered a few parts too. But the actual solutiom was to press one outer plate off of a piece of unused 8s chain. Slide the other plate and it's 2 pins out, and you have a master link. Replace the Connex with it and rivet the outer plate back on (the Rohloff cross peens the pins). Works great.

I got some Shimano 9speed bullet chain pins. Used with the 8s outer plates on the 11s chain they make a little tighter fit than the 8s pins. I do rivet both ends of the pin with the Rohloff peening tool. I don't rely on the Shimano press fit in a Wippermann chain. I probably wouldn't rely on it in a Shimano chain for my bike either.
