Clicking noise only when pedaling BBS02

TURNED OUT TO BE THE COPPER WASHERS I PUT BETWEEN THE CRANK AND THE PEDALS TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE CRANK SURFACE. THE BAFANG BBS02B REMAINS TROUBLE FREE ONCE AGAIN. REMEMBER TO CHECK "EVERY NUT & BOLT" BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE MOTOR COMPONENTS. ENJOY THE READ ANYWAY...

Ive noticed a rather slow click-click-click noise from my BBS02 only when pedaling under pressure that sounds like a falling ball bearing or possibly a freewheel lever flopping. At first I thought it was a zipper handle hitting the frame, but eliminated that. Then I thought it might be brake rotor related, but it doesn’t do it when I coast. In trying to narrow it down, I noticed no clicking when ghost pedaling, so the only time I hear it is when pedaling with pressure on the bottom bracket and motor internals from the pedals.

Has anyone else had a similar issue and discovered what was causing it?

Hope to check for any crank slop and if the BB nut has worked loose today, but it sounds internal to the motor as if something is “flopping” around or like a ball bearing dropping during each rotation of ththe crank, yet ghost pedaling doesn’t produce it. I’m puzzled!

I did a quick short video of the clicking noise while pedaling, but don't have the software to watch ".3gp" videos on my computer. I tried to attach it here, but I got a message that said I can't upload a ".3gp" file. The video was taken on an iPhone.

Anyone have thoughts on how to get the video into this thread?

My BBSHD creaks in the bottom bracket. If I put a few drops of oil there the BBSHD touches the frame - especially on the sprocket end - the creak stops for a couple of weeks. Will tear it down this winter and see if I can solve it better. The motor is tight on the BB.

Alternatives: bad motor shaft bearing? I think the bearing is robust enough not to be a problem for many thousands of miles. Nylon gear missing a tooth or worn? My bike has a ticking noise there too but it is very slight. Pedal bearings clicking? If you have a second set of pedals, swap them onto your bike and see if the problem goes away. Usually only clicks under load for me.

Again this winter I plan to tear the bike down and regrease everything and inspect the nylon gear. Looks like I need a new charger so I'll also order that gear so if the bike breaks down I have the gear on hand.

I have 2000 miles on it, some of those miles have been harsh b/c hard starts. I've also let about three dozen people test ride the bike over the years because everyone needs to ride an ebike at least once.

JoeA - Thanks for posting your thoughts, one of which was correct. The reason I didn’t swap my pedals out earlier is that they are brand new and appeared to be tight enough. Only thin hardened pedal washers or none at all for me from now on.

It's the strangest thing. The BBS02B works perfectly in all respects, but there is this slow tink, tink, tink... Using my mechanical mind, all I can picture is a free wheel foot without spring tension and not locked into place flopping. I think I will try to find a good internal picture of the BBS02B to see what's in there. If it has 4 pawls and one has broken and is flopping around in there, the system probably would still work fine with 3 pawls, or even 2 if there are only 3. It's a head scratcher that's for sure.

I was hoping someone else may have experienced a similar noise they diagnosed and repaired. Looks like I'm the guinea pig a-g-a-I-n.

I looked up the freewheel clutch for Bafang BBS02 mid-drives to see what they look like. Here’s one on Luna’s site:

        https://lunacycle.com/bbs02-replacement-clutch/

Best guess is one of these pawls bouncing around. Is there 3 or 6 pawls? (the gap in between each seems strange)

        Are the pawls spring loaded?

Have others broke or had pawls come loose?

Does the sound "go off" always in the same crank arm position? The distance between the pawl and the gear tooth is so small I'm skeptical you'd be able to hear it, but I dunno.

          Not a pedal?

I think there are three pawls, per this teardown: https://electricbike.com/forum/forum...ch-replacement

Yes, the sound appears to be in the same crank position no matter how I mix up the pedaling with back pedaling and shifting.

What do you mean by "Not a pedal?" If you are asking if the pedal is making the noise, I don't think so. When I ghost pedal without pressure on the mid-drive system (just slowly spin the crank without engaging) it doesn't make the noise. The pedals are turning in that scenario.

I'm trying to get my nephew who uses anything on the internet to post it for me. About all I have accounts for is a few shopping sites and a few bike sites. Hate that you have to give sites personal information, email and sometime access to your system to use their sites. No online banking for this old school guy. I'm one of those people that has a desktop that can't even connect to the internet for personal stuff. Best security is zero access ability by others. No worries that way and sleep well at night. ;-)

I think so, via a ring clip that rides in that gap in the pawl.

Understandable and valid concern. I semi-gave up on that, as IT was my industry, and I now deal with DPOA stuff as well. "They" are making it harder and harder (and sometimes more expensive) every year to not to be wired in.

Boy do you have that right! I’m trained in IT and Financial Investments (double major). Personally I don’t like the direction AI or technology in general is going. My bank keeps telling me how I can do things without coming into the bank. I just smile and tell them I enjoy the human contact and I don’t want you to lose your job. Cash is king baby! No audit trail.

My biggest concern is a financial calapse that gives them the opportunity to eliminate currency and move to money credits in bits and bites; while at the same time devaluing the US dollar. The new kids on the block don’t really understand what happen when we went off the gold standard and went to a fiat currency. Our money today isn’t worth anything other than faith and currency wars are in full swing as trade tariff games are played.

What is DPOA? Only thing I know that to be is Durable Power Of Attorney. Are the peeper crooks findings ways to produce those to access elderlies life savings now?

There are times when I just want to chuck the personal life invasion tracker in my pocket into the ocean, cancel digital cable/internet/phone bundle and have the copper land line with power source (that works during power outages) reinstalled with an on location recorder not connected to anything digital. But then there’s the microphone and tracking system in my modern car... My 1968 International Travelall 4X4 Adventure Rig doesn’t have any of that BS in it or the troublesome Engine Check Light issues of modern cars.

Currently I juggle 3 cell phones, 2 tablets, 2 laptops and 3 desk tops. All setup up differently for different proposes and not linked together. I often wonder if it is all worth the advantages it provides, but without it sources like this forum would be out of reach.

I found this thread that sounded similar:

              https://electricbike.com/forum/forum...eshooting-help

He found it to be the bolts holding the the sprocket on, so I went out and checked those and all other bolts and nuts. The only thing I found to be loose at all was the nut and bolt on my custom motor torque arm mounted to the lower left stay; clearly not the issue.

I also found this thread in the UK which appears to be the same thing:

              http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/thre...bracket.19842/

This long thread never states the resolution...

Hopefully I will get a video uploaded today. I may remove the bottom bracket to examine the bearings. If they look good, I will move on to examining the clutch freewheel mechanism. Luckily I have the proper socket for the BB mounting nut and the smaller 4-slot nut to disassemble it.

But first I want to get a good ride in today just in case this side lines my ride after digging into it.

I would have guessed zipper handle slap but darn, you already ruled that out. :-)

I had a hard time making it out, and maybe heard three "tinks" at the 2-3 second mark - I'm hoping for just movement in the BB.

You'll figure it out, once the motor is pulled.

Banged out a quick 40 miler this morning. Now it's all set up to pull the crank axle out without removing the motor from the frame. Good weekend project.

Here's another short video too. Sounds so much like a ball bearing dropping during each turn of the crank; metal clink/clunk/clank inside a small space.

Okay, jumped on this issue this morning. Removed both cranks, chain and sprocket, then tried to get the seal on the left side out. It appears to have a outer aluminum shell around it against the inner threads. In picking at it, these pieces of what look like aluminum broke off. Basically I couldn't get it out easily, so I turned to the internet for a how-to.

While doing that I came across a couple other threads that sound like a similar problem and both resolved it by tightening down the large 4-notched motor mount nut. I had already checked this a week ago with my pictured small spanner wrench on the socket, but I decided to get out the "Big-Boy" spanner just to make sure. Sure enough I got an 1/8-1/4 turn out of it.

Feeling proud of my he-man strength and knowing I only have a single nut on the 73mm BB with a 3mm spacer on the drive side, I figured that must be what it was. I reassembled everything and went for a test ride thinking, boy that was easy. Nope, that didn't change a thing and the click/clank/clunk was still there. Damn it! Now I have to remove everything I had already removed and figure out how to get that BB seal off.

What's the trick to removing the BB seal that appears to have an aluminum outer shell on it? Is the outer shell threaded or is it a press fit? Do I need to spin it off or just destroy it to remove it?

Those pieces that broke off don't appear to have threads on them.
