I have a lengthy commute and make use of the time to sit on conference calls rather than add 1-2 more hours to my work day away from home. my bike commute will be 45-60 minutes, with a lot of it on protected trails, so I won't be overly distracted in traffic. Is anyone else making phone calls on their rides? what are you using to protect the ear pieces and particularly the microphones from wind noise? I have a full communication system built into the helmet I wear when driving (on a track), but a full face helmet seems a bit much for a bike.

I talked to a surgeon and told him that riding bikes was my hobby. His first reaction was "You need a full face helmet". He then proceeded to tell me the gory details of his past experiences, the general theme of which was people flying off their bikes and landing on their faces. He was very convincing.

I have a different face helmet when I teach in my BMW m3 on race tracks. I have a take but longish commute across 17 miles each way with about 700 vertical feet of climbing. I spend a fair amount of my 1 hr car commutes on conference calls listening too a lot and clarifying a few items from time to time. Some kind of protected c microphone is necessary, and I'll definitely have eye protection, but if I'm going to a full helmet I might as well buy a piaggio bv 200.

If you haven't found a solution yet I have a sena smh-10 mounted to my bicycle helmet with a Mic that's designed for an open face motorcycle helmet that I've been using for about 4 years now in the rain snow hail thunderstorms and temps from 110f to -24f and the only way people can tell I'm on a bike is because I'm breathing hard.

For me, any of those distractions (speakers playing music, headphones, cellphones, etc) don't make sense, There is enough to pay attention to out there just to stay safe and sound.Last edited by Fred; 12-31-2017, 07:17 PM.

We can go on all day about the dangers of distracted riding but just remember I was just answering a question about what I use to try and help someone out.
Also everyone's commute is not the same I commute 40 miles round trip every day it's all bike trail I cross 3 country roads where I see maybe 2 to 3 cars a month and might run into somebody else on the trail once a month so why would music and phone calls be so dangerous for me?

I do and it's so quiet and peaceful it's a great way to unwind on the way home. By the time I get home all the stress from my day at work is gone. I wouldn't change it for anything.

Bike commutes really do melt away stress. I have left home (or work) raging angry and arrived at my destination totally fine 14 minutes later. I wish my commute was longer.
Maybe bicycle commuting is so awesome that many people will choose a longer route.Last edited by commuter ebikes; 01-01-2018, 12:45 PM.

I can shorten my commute to work down to 15 miles each way but then I do get tied up in traffic and people trying to run me over and that was more stressful than work so I added 5 miles each way to get out in the country.

I tried that for about 6 months and realized somebody was going to run me over or I was going to quit riding if I didn't change my route. So on my way home from work I started exploring new routes it took about another 6 months to piece my route together but it was well worth it.

I just went out and looked for another route, but my ebike is not a good fit for the paved bike trails in my city. Even when I slow down, people gave me the stink eye because of the way my bike looks. I will be staying on the streets, but I will definitely choose a longer route. More miles = more fun.
