Throttle Left or Right side of handlebars?

When I received my X1 this March, the throttle was on the right side of the handlebars. However, I see that in many other photos and videos that the bikes came with the throttle on the left side. I don't use the throttle very much and as a long time ATV rider, I'm used to the throttle on the right. However, I don't shift with my hands on an ATV. I realize where the throttle is located is a preference but I'm wondering what reasons other riders have for putting it on the left or the right side? And further, why did Luna start shipping the X1's with the throttle on the right side recently?

I think one reason conversions often end up with the throttle on the left is you end up removing the left (front) shifter so there is space there. You keep the right rear shifter so that space is taken up.

OP, when I was using the universal thumb throttle...the lower profile one that pushes down instead of to the side...I installed it on the left. One reason was as 73Eldo suggests, there was more room because the shifter is on the right. Being a dirt motor guy, I went to the Luna full twist throttle because it's more intuitive for me. The throttle type and location is highly preferential.

It seems like Luna started shipping the X1's with the throttle on the right side recently. The location of the throttle is often a matter of personal preference, but it's interesting to hear about the reasons behind different placements. As an ATV rider, I'm used to the throttle being on the right side as well.

I'm used to a right side throttle too.
I bought an X2.5 Ludicrous in April 2025 and it came with the thumb throttle on the left side. It works fine but I wanted to have a half twist throttle on the right. I also wanted to have the shifter on the left side. There are a few right side throttles available, but I could not find any shifters made for the left side, and I really don't know why that is. It seems like Shimano and SRAM should have that left side option.
The only solution I found was to put a SRAM 12 speed Grip Shifter on the left and just use it backwards. It takes a little getting used to, coming from trigger shifters on the right, but it works perfectly with an X01 derailleur and I really like it. Since it's on the left, just twist forward to downshift.
I also put the rear brake lever on the left, which allows me to brake and throttle with separate hands. For the dropper post, a Wolftooth ReMote 360 lever on the right side, with the lever end located just above the front brake lever. That works great for easy, index finger dropper control. Then, to mate with the half twist throttle and Gripshift shifter are Ergon GP3 L Gripshift grips. This is my favorite setup so far.

Motorcycles etc. have the throttle on the right. The brake levers are reversed from normal US bicycle practice also ( but not Europe). Most bicycles with gears have a shifter on the right. Having the shifter, the brake ,and the throttle in one place can get kind of tricky. The most effective braking technique is front brake only. So sort it out for yourself.
Older Ebikes were converted bicycles, so adding a LH throttle made sense, especially since any front shifter was usually eliminated. But newer Ebikes especially the 3000W stuff are basically Emotorcycles and the controls reflect that.
I personally have an Ebike and a pedal bike, so I stick with the classic layout. But guys with Motorcycle backgrounds use a setup that suits them.
