Best road bike I can get for $2000

Hello,
I sold my old bike recently for $500, it was a heavy trek hardtail (14kg) because I want to upgrade to a decent road bike.
I would like to take cycling a bit more competitively and may be join the university team so I am looking for the best road bike I can get for $1500 to $2000.
Which do you think is better value for the money?

I would think talking to or at least looking at what the other team members are riding would be a good source of info. If they are all riding carbon super bikes $2k may not be enough.

I have PLANET X HURRICANE SRAM RIVAL 22; it's pretty good and not an expensive bike. I also was on the university team. That was a great time. I think I've studied more with my team, but not at the lections. I remember when I just joined university without any desire to learn. But the guys from the group helped me to love it.
